You know Fred Astaire is a true artist because he would relentlessly drive himself to the edge to make his dance steps appear lighter than air, for his art to look so easy and effortless. With such a wonderfully arced design, the carver of this bent Dublin (Luigi, or one of his two sons: Gianluca or Marzio) has proven himself a master pipemaker. I wonder if the other two members of the Radice clan were either proud or jealous when presented with this piece. I would guess jealous, as I would certainly be. The artisan somehow miraculously crafts a pipe whose substantial bulk exudes a very solid composure, and also alludes to something primal in its ridged flare, but yet imbued with sophistication and reservedly subtlety by way of its gently bent gesture.
