While some pipe makers are content to produce the same kind of pipe over and over, of the same size and color and texture and tone, with perhaps only slight modifications made to the impression of its general shape, this cannot be said to be true of American carver Rolando Negoita. Rolando plays with a myriad of ideas, shapes, forms, and materials, and brings them together time and time again in a deftly orchestrated harmony. Such is the case with Rolando's 'Twist', one of his latest breathtaking offerings. With what might have begun as a rather inspired 'Blowfish', the carver introduced curves and bends that spiral around the body of the piece, creating a highly stylized, sharp, almost modernist-like composition. And between the swirling panorama of polished grain and the gorgeous plate of sterling silver that mounts the shank terminus (and tenon), this pipe simply beams with style.
