Smio Satou: Smooth Bent Brandy with Bamboo
Product Number: 002-142-0320
My first impression of this Smio Satou bent Brandy is that of a Japanese reinterpretation of the Danish "Tulip" variation, and, frankly, it's one that has stuck. Similar to the Tulip, the mass of the bowl has been shifted right down to the bottom, simultaneously elongating and refining the taper towards the rim, and of course like the Tulip itself, said rim is artfully canted. Through Satou's alterations, however, we find the lower bowl is a bit firmer, making for a more solid anchor to the shape, the rear face is sloped, making things a little more dynamic, and a subtle touch of concavity to the forward face adds a bit of extra softness, even while combining with the lower bowl's changes to make for a bolder heel, and the crest of the sweeping rim to create a leading edge that hints at a carefully subdued urgency.
