By many pipe makers' standards, the scintillating splendor which is presently on your monitor would be considered a good size briar. Compared to most any bowl seen in Smio Satou’s bamboo Dublin work, this one is huge. Often, when a pipe maker moves out of what I perceive as his "size zone" on a given shape, I have a tendency to look for at least a hint of the wonky (not totally rational, but I tend to nonetheless). This pipe is stellar. Satou-san's quiet minimalism is well in play in the overarching composition and not one whit of his signature harmony is sacrificed on the altar of larger scale. Fantastic grain is found at every turn, as is a poignantly beautiful balance and bamboo work. To my mind, this pipe is the very embodiment of all that is "good and right" in Satou's pipes. Here there just happens to more of it in one place than usual.
