Though it embarrasses me to admit it, I had never seen the work of Smio Satou until I joined Smokingpipes.com back in 2005. I was immediately smitten with his work and, within a few more exposures, a still-abiding reverence for the master's art had been formed. If I were to play some type of briar word association game; someone calls out an artist's name, and I have to answer with the first shape that popped into my head (pretty sure that game wouldn't change home entertainment forever), my answer to "Satou" would be "Bamboo Dublin". I suspect that more than a few of his fans would agree.
While not the quintessential Satou bamboo bent Dublin, only 15% or so present a muted pick heel, it is a much loved variation and sought by many collectors. The Dublin shaped bowl, delicately articulated from cambered rim to spiked heel, is nearly a study in perfection. The bamboo and accent of labor-intensive tsuishu is perfection.
