Twelve — achingly perfect — inches in length, twelve knuckles of slender, creamy bamboo, and every millimeter the subject of the most scrupulous attention to detail the pipemaking world has known, in our 14 years we have only seen one longer Satou, and that was in 2005. On the matter of the grain, and I have just spent an hour evaluating every photo in our Satou archives, this bent Dublin boasts a quality, consistency, and coverage that would place in the top 1% of all of the pipes we have received from the legend, and there is a strong argument for placing it at the pinnacle.
Finished with an exotic resin, one which will retain its luster for a lifetime with no more effort than the occasional gentle wipe of a soft cloth, while this jewel would be my personal choice to represent the zenith of Smio Satou's art in a museum, I would feel conflicted about such a consignment... pipes are meant to be smoked. I'm setting this one aside, in order to be able to occasionally look at it as I describe other pipes. It's highly unlikely I will see likes of this masterpiece again.
