This is an unusual shape from pipemaker Smio Satou. Rather squat and masculine in its rendering, with a bowl that runs fairly egg shaped at its width, the piece doesn't strike me as nearly as soft or gracile as the kind of work we're use to seeing from the man. That's not to see that I don't like the pipe, because in fact I do. It's just different, which is very often a good thing. The piece is beautifully constructed, and a delight in the hand in part due to Satou's signature finishing process. And as you can clearly see, this Pot does not want for straight grain.
