Ah, the wonders of geometry, and leverage. What else could allow a full-size, stout-walled billiard to hang so easily from one's lips? Certainly there are other ways to achieve this affect - a smaller pipe, or counter-balancing the bowl in some dimension human physiology does not equip us to perceive, even, perhaps, devising a complex system involving doves and kite strings to keep the briar aloft. If you'll have none of that, however, there is of course the tried-and-true method of bending the shank and stem, and the more the better.
