Giancarlo Guidi founded Ser Jacopo in 1983 in Pesaro, Italy and turned it into one of Italy’s most popular brands. He, along with 4 other people, make roughly 3,500 pipes each year (a third of which make it to the United States). The company has become famous for rather large pipes and often has art-inspired pieces, such as the Pica series (based on famous artists like Vincent Van Gogh and Rene' Magritte), and have stellar quality.
Their pipes end up as smooth, sandblast, rusticated (or a combination of these) and each is fitted with an acrylic mouthpiece. Many of the pipes feature ferrules of briar, horn, and silver or simply have these accents on the stem. Ser Jacopo is one of the few companies to use a special tool which allows them to ‘drill’ a curved airway in the shank – without which it would be impossible to smoke some of their most striking shapes. The pieces are each graded according to finish and size (MAXIMA [sometimes multiple]) make up their largest creations, and the gemma series is reserved for only their highest-quality briars.
