This highly gestural (not to mention very large) bent Egg is a fine example of the greater freedom of design Ser Jacopo's continuous-curve drilling technique allows. Other pipemakers may have been able to create a briar with a shank like this, but only by drilling two straight holes, one down the shank, then a second one angled down from the bowl, (hopefully) meeting the first. This more common technique, however, wouldn't work with such a tall bowl - you wouldn't be able to get the right angle for the second hole, plus it result in a pipe unlikely to allow a pipecleaner to pass straight through. With Ser Jacopo's special drilling apparatus, both greater flexibility in design, and smooth, pipecleaner friendly engineering is assured.
