About This Pipe

You don't usually see a Hawkbill-style shank and stem combined with a Barrel-shaped bowl, but of course Ser Jacopo's Pictas are not by any stretch your usual series. Each shape coincides with a particular work of a celebrated painter in which a pipe is featured, and given the strange and imaginative nature of many of these works, it's hardly any surprise that the series produces so many novel shapes. In fact, compared to the work this pipe's form was drawn from, a sketch featuring a number of faces sprouting from a naked woman's body (her right arm, for example, is smoking two pipes, and her left breast has gone so far as to manifest a speech bubble). well, the Hawkbill/Barrel mash-up no longer seems so strange by comparison.
