Young, disciplined and talented, Lasse Skovgaard Jorgensen exploded onto the pipe making world in early 2005, at just 21. He had been making pipes for Larsen, the estimable Copenhagen firm, for a few years previous to making pipes under his own name. His father, Benni Jorgensen, had made pipes for Larsen for decades, having learned the craft primarily from Teddy Knudsen, who had also made pipes for Larsen.
Of course, much like other second and third generation pipe makers, Lasse grew up around pipes, in his father’s workshop, helping him and watching the processes. At sixteen, Lasse started making tampers and other pipe accessories from horn and other materials for the Larsen shop. He made a few pipes then also, but neither he nor his father were particularly happy with the early results. He kept practicing though and he made quick progress. At eighteen, he was making ‘Two-Tone’ and ‘Select’ series pipes for Larsen and started making pipes for Larsen’s top ‘Straight Grain’ series the following year. |  |

In 2004, Teddy Knudsen suggested that Lasse go to the Chicago Pipe Show with a few pipes stamped with his own name. Lasse mostly went to show to see what others were up to and get responses on the twelve pipes he brought with him. The response was incredibly positive; he sold the twelve pipes quickly at the show and the response was overwhelmingly enthusiastic.
Later in 2004 and in early 2005, Lasse began laying the foundation for his future as a pipe maker. He built a website, began working with dealers in various countries and worked to refine his style. Following an enormously successful show in 2005, Lasse began to settle into his life as a pipe maker. |

Lasse’s style, unsurprisingly, reflects that of his father to a great degree. Both father and son exhibit strong stylistic influences from Teddy, and more broadly, the Larsen stylistic school that Teddy did so much to define. There are definite differences between the work produced by Benni and that of Lasse, though. While their more classical shapes share the same framework, their more avant-garde pieces can be strikingly different. In both cases, often the seed of a shape idea, from Lasse’s Whale shape to his Elephant’s Foot shapes, can be traced through Benni to Teddy or directly to Teddy’s work, but the resulting compositions are very much his own, having left his own distinct stylistic imprint.
Today, Lasse and Benni share a large workshop adjacent to Benni’s home in Praesto, on the southern part of Zealand. Lasse is a decidedly prolific pipe maker, making 400-500 per year, which also makes it possible for him to be one of the best values in Danish pipes, with sandblasted pipes starting around $200. |
