Stanwell: Army Mount Smooth Red (19)
Product Number: 002-034-7899
The army mount came about during WWI, when pipes were everywhere (including in the trenches), and excepting figural designs and some traditional, regional styles (Tyrolean, etc.), the classic French/English shapes were pretty much the only thing going. As such, it's not surprising that to this day if you see a pipe with such a mount, it's most likely to be one that doesn't differ too much from shapes you could find on a hundred year old chart. We now consider it a classic feature, and so we tend to stick it on classic shapes, often seeing it as a way to emphasize their classicalness. But here Stanwell throws that out the window and gives us one of the most modern and dynamic of the designs Sixten Ivarsson ever drew up for them, the "19".
