Stanwell: Sterling (243)

Product Number: 002-034-4560

Looking at old Stanwell catalogs from the 1960s and 1970s, there are lots of shapes similar to this-- the bowl protrudes below the bottom of the shank and features a lovely, sweeping curved shank. Lots of these shapes were designed by Sixten Ivarsson for Stanwell during the 1960s. I don't have documentary proof that this is a Sixten shape, but I am about 99% sure. It's presented here in the Sterling series, which is new (sort of) to the US. The Sterling series pipes were available in the US in the late 1990s and the first couple of years of the 2000s, but weren't around for quite some time there. If memory serves, the newer ones sports a lighter stain and a slightly larger band than the old series. This one sports some impressive, fine flame grain on the sides of the bowl.
