About This Pipe
Unique amongst the blowfish that I have encountered, Todd Johnson has created a pipe that is imbued with Japanese katachi elements overlaid on a foundation of formal European sensibility. The massive, tapering shank provides the compositional anchor for a daring bowl execution that seems to combine elements of Hiroyuki Tokutomi's blowfish, augmented with an additional, almost western style bevel. This layering seems to have come to the fore with Todd's continued contact with Tokutomi. These touches do far more than embellish, but change the entire composition into something that is distinctly Todd's and Todd's alone.
