I can't say I surprised to find out that Walt Cannoy had enjoyed a previous career as a research and development mechanic - not since I'd handled this particular briar beforehand. It's a beautiful design, yes, taking the old Cavalier theme and reinterpreting in a sleek and modern manner, but just as impressive is the fantastically precise fit and finish with which he's combined its multitude layers of alternating materials. Vulcanite, zebrawood, and briar follow one after the other, each mated to the other with both perfectly clean lines and excellent visual balance. On top of it all, he's even made it sit very properly indeed, no doubt quite a feat given the rather lengthy stem.
