Here Walt presents us with a textbook classic for the shape, and something completely different for the medium. It's morta, semi-petrified oak, and polished morta at that. Several other artisanal pipemakers have delved into this material, but the typical presentation has been freehand or modern, re-interpretative design, paired to a sandblast for the finish. Those familiar with Cannoy's Suedeblasts know he has a penchant for combining the novel with the classic, and so shouldn't be surprised to see that's just how he's handled things here. If you're one who's been curious about morta, but prefer traditional design over wasp-waisted transitions or great, massive bowls, I'd keep an eye on Walt's work; somehow I suspect this isn't going to be the last time we see a shape-chart perfect classic in morta with his name on it.
