When I queried Adam Davidson as to whether there was any particular advantage given by lighters of this earlier style, he summed it as something along these lines: Unlike other styles of lighter design, they'll look right at home in your Duesenberg. And he's right, of course. While the modern age has given us widespread unibody construction and the handy-dandy cheap plastic Bic lighter, this design remains timelessly elegant, whether it's executed in a precious-metal Dunhill, or as one of these considerably more modest Vertigos.
