Aside from being handy for restoring estate pipes purchased from sellers who may not have done any cleaning, shank brushes like this are good to have around just for regular maintenance of your regular smokers as well. The stiff bristles combined with a bit of grain alcohol (or other strong spirits) can make short work of stubborn build-up inside the mortise and draft-hole, plus (unlike bristled pipe-cleaners) you can just rinse a brush off and use it again, and again, and again.

Smoke a few bowls, clean your pipe, this is more for those who are lazy and cake out their pipes. It works for the heavy stuff but you should stop being lazy and playing catch up with the cleaning.
