Built into their own self-containing plastic case, these Brigham pipe tampers are particularly well-suited to those on the go; you can use either tamper or pick tools, thread them back together, and tuck the whole thing back into a pocket without any worry of leaving ash on (or in) your clothing.
While I still carry and use a "pipe knife" (a Rodgers stainless "smoker's knife"), I prefer tamping with one of these Brigham tampers.
Many years ago, I purchased a Savinelli tool that is nearly identical to these except it's mad... Read Moree of briar and the tools are gold-toned. I still have that tool, but it stays in my storage case since I'm much less concerned about anything that might happen to these much less expensive tools.

The first one of these I purchased years ago ended up stripped so it wouldn't close securely, but I've been more careful with the replacement. Use minimum torque when you close it to prevent the threads from wearing too quickly. The replacement has lasted well for more than a year and a half of daily use.
I keep one in my truck, one in my tobacco pouch, and a couple spares. Read Less
