I've used Czech tools and pipe nails, and I prefer this. It's the sort of thing that comes along that makes me think "I better buy a back up in case I lose it."
It's got as much heft to it as the Czech tool, and is about 1/2" longer... Read More
and 1/10" wider. That doesn't sound like much, but in the hand, I definitely notice it. It just feels good.
The draft holes are a great idea. Plus, not shown on these images, the underside is domed slightly, and has small grooves in a sort of starburst pattern radiating out from the center. I find this REALLY helps with stoking an ember...I can tamp and twist to get a nice even burn.
Yes, unscrewing to get at the pick might be cumbersome, but I don't mind since during a bowl I might use it once if at all anyway.
The price might seem like a lot for a simple tool, but it was worth it to me...I got a very functional and elegant bit of luxury for 1/3 the price of some other similar items out there. Read Less
A First Class Tamper

Product: Tampers & Tools 8deco Club Tamper Redwood
Light, sleek, and just the perfect foot with holes which allow air to flow as you tamp and draw. Slips nicely in the pocket, and the pick is rounded for better performance. This is my second 8deco, I have a larger one and they are excellent.
I Love These Things

So I have a bunch of these. And I've given a bunch of these away to new pipers because they need it as much as I do. And what better tool to have. The vented base is ingenius, whether it actually does anything or not, it makes me feel like it works b... Read More
etter and that's what matters. The domed shape of the base is another feature that I love, because I can tamp around the bowl walls and push the unburned tobacco into the center without overpacking the ash bed. Read Less
Great Tamper

This is an elegant but affordable option if you want an upgrade from the classic Czech tool. It is slightly darker than it appears in the pictures--a quality that suits my preference. My only issue is that the tamper is too wide for some of my narrow... Read More
er, tapering bowls, which as an avid VA and VA/Per smoker are the bowls I use the most. Read Less
Not Lacking In Form Or Function

Product: Tampers & Tools 8deco Club Tamper Redwood
One distinct feature of this tamper in terms of form is its vented foot, not something I find on most tampers. Compacting the burning tobacco without stamping it out is a worthy pursuit, and this tamper’s good for that. Its internal dottle pick is wh... Read More
at you’d find in most tampers. But the redwood shaft...that’s what distinguishes this little charmer in terms of form, or better yet, style. Redwood is certainly not the most common wood in either construction or artisanry. So to me, this tamper is a delight to behold (just careful as it’s not hard to scratch). Those nostalgic for Northern California and the Pac Northwest, I can imagine, would find this little number even more charming. And still abundantly affordable. Read Less
Its pretty cool

A well priced tamper. My only gripe is the tamp is too wide as I reach the bottom of a narrow bowl. Also, I like to chase an ember, but the holes in this foot won't allow that. I simply unscrew the foot, and use the skinny end of the 'club' handle to... Read More

While I don't tamp once lit, I tamp for filling. Nice tool.
Best tamper

For the price of this tamper it's perfect. The concave shape of the tamper and the holes in it provides for the almost perfect tamp. I highly suggest this tamper to anyone, but especially to new comers.
