Brian Levine recently paid us a visit on his way through town, and, sure enough, shortly thereafter there arrived new products from Brigham. In this case, more specifically, a variety of steel, hardwood, and aluminum tampers. This model features a slim, neat, modern profile, livened up by vibrant red-finished scales.

e the foot fell off while I was tamping my pipe. Finally, both the pick and the scraper seem to be loosely attached. I'm not sure if this was a tool that got past quality control, or if it was just bad design, but either way, while the idea is good, the execution was terrible....Read More

Needs a couple improvements

on a Czech tool or $1 pipe nail. It's small enough that evenly tamping a decently-sized bowl is somewhat annoying. More importantly, the fold-in design of the pick leaves the point of the pick just clear of the edge of the tamping head. So when tamping near the top of the bowl, the tip of the pick can gouge your rim, which is just unacceptable design to me. Attempts to bend the tip of the pick just a bit further in have been unsuccessful, probably because it's stainless steel. It's hard to see how someone could have designed this, used it, and not noticed the problem. And it's even more annoying because making the foot just a little bit larger would safely cover the end of the pick and solve both of my problems at once.
If the manufacturer redesigned this with a larger foot, I'd buy it again in a heartbeat, because it's otherwise fantastic for the price. But as is, I can't recommend it....Read More

ng blade, with its serrated side, is ideal for both performing minor reaming and scooping out dottle. What impressed me in particular was the shape of the tool; its slightly wider end opposite the tamping end, is broader to provide extra weight for tamping. It also provides a very tactile heft in your hand. You can feel the extra weight this provides for centering your tamping, and it does an excellent job of this. It makes wonder how you ever could have used those cheap $2 tools you find in most smoke shops. Add to this what appears to be a matte brushed steel body, with its red and black scales, and you have not only a very functional tool, but a very attractive one that will have everyone asking "What is that?" With the exceptionally low price, you simply can't go wrong with this item. I have spent more on a simple jackknife at K-Mart than this tool. In fact, I plan on getting another one for traveling.
