Position: Sales Manager

Division: Cornell & Diehl

If you like a dynamic work environment with knowledgeable colleagues in an industry serving enthusiastic clients, read on for a smokin’ opportunity.

Laudisi Enterprises is a big fish in the small pond of pipes and pipe tobacco. Our holdings include Smokingpipes.com, the largest retailer of pipes in the world; Laudisi Distribution Group, which provides pipes, tobacco, and accessories to retailers; Peterson of Dublin, which is the oldest continuously operating pipe factory in the world; Smokingpipes Europe, serving, obviously, Europe; Low Country Pipe and Cigar, our own brick-and-mortar, full-service tobacconist; and Cornell & Diehl Tobacco Company, manufacturing boutique pipe tobacco for a global clientele of discerning pipe smokers.

The company is 21 years old and has grown impressively every year of its history, now with more than 140 employees supporting a global community of pipe enthusiasts. Cornell & Diehl is working at capacity to maintain production and meet growing demand. If you’re self-motivated, organized, energetic, ambitious, and support the rights of adults to enjoy tobacco products, this might be the position that opens the door to an interesting, challenging and, yes, fun long-term career.

Who do we want to hire?

We want to hire someone smart, literate, and numerate. And we mean it. You should be able to write quickly, cleanly, and competently. You should be able to handle numbers reflexively and without fuss. We're not looking for a poet or an engineer, though. We're looking for a well-educated, well-rounded thinker. We'll be delighted to teach you how the business works; we will not be delighted if we have to teach you basic algebra or how to construct a sentence or rudimentary geography.

We’re looking for a problem solver, someone to get things done — and get them done the right way, not just to check off items on a to-do list. You make checklists and take notes — you know how to optimize your own productivity and are self-aware enough to know that your workflow will forever be a work in progress. You satiate your ambition with hard, fulfilling work and thrive when your mind is active and happily engaged.

And what does the C&D Sales Manager do?

Your first three or six months will be spent learning about Cornell & Diehl as a business and a brand by working on-site with your manufacturing team, learning how our pipe tobaccos are made and packaged, how they are sold, to whom they are sold, and why. You will also be exposed, limitedly at first, but ultimately increasingly, to our sales efforts both domestically and internationally, from strategy to submitting purchases.

After your first six or nine months at Laudisi we will expect a solid understanding of how C&D operates as a manufacturer, a functional understanding of the sales process, a working knowledge of the C&D brand, the blends we make, and the components that go in them. You should be on your way to developing some product expertise that should fully mature in a couple of years.

At the mark of your first year with us we will assess and review your performance, like we do for everyone at Laudisi.

The goal of this role is to develop a competent and effective Sales Manager for Cornell & Diehl. This can only be accomplished with exposure to the wider premium tobacco industry, time at other manufacturers, understanding how various, related supply chains interact, and knowing when and where to look for sales data. This will take time and practice and it will require focus, commitment and engagement.
