and creamy nature and clean taste. The taste is so well blended it's practically in a league of it's own. It has the richest Latakia, smokey and full flavored, but it's very mellow and toothless. It has flavorful orientals that add complexity rarely had in a blend (Yenidje?). And, then there's the top note...I don't really know if it's licorice or anise and I don't really care, as long as they never change it. It makes this smoke nice and cool without taking any of it's flavors and complexity away. In fact, the Bengal Slices experience made me reevaluate what is five star taste and strength and when exactly can it be said to have five star room note? Taste and aroma are always so subjective anyways. But, this one blend (actually it's not a blend, but rather a sliced crumble cake) puts rating systems to the test and turns them upside down. Almost everyone I know says it has a great room note, something rarely bestowed on a Latakia forward tobacco. And, Bengal Slices proves that a tobacco doesn't have to taste like baked goods or candy to have unbelievable flavor; it's frequently given high marks for taste. This is not an uber-strong tobacco either, in fact I find it mellow enough to smoke anytime of day in spite of being Latakia heavy. Bengal Slices is just mesmerizing, defying similar blends as simply ho-hum. The closest I've had was another RO called Fusilier's Ration, and even it can't hold up next to Bengal Slices. The original slices was made ages ago by Sobranie...and although Balkan Sobranie has it's well earned reputation, IMO Bengal Slices is better still. Read Less

and with additional information, was able to perfect the top note. I believe it’s a combination of tonquin bean and anisette. The blend is very similar to my favorite tobacco, Plum Pudding. However, it’s a bit sweeter, and a touch brighter than Plum Pudding. Also the blend doesn’t have the spicy component of the Perique as does Plum Pudding. It crumbles so nicely and the subtle top note isn’t overbearing. The flavor goes perfectly with the tobaccos. One of my favorite blends. Thank you, Russ. Read Less

trying English Blends for the last two years that has made my smoking experience much better.
Bengal Slices brings an experience to the palate unlike most others. For one thing, it is a smooth smoke. The latakia and orientals bring a nice spiciness to the flavor. I really enjoy the experience in the retro-hale. Moreover, there is no tongue-bite. The only complaint I have, is the moisture level means delaying gratification 10-15 minutes before lighting up a bowl to dry it a little. Otherwise, this is a great smoke. Read Less

The unique subtle topping comes to the fore...as a light, cool, tingling on the tongue, that I could swear is spearmint, with a drop or two of honey, for sweetness.... This rich, yet gentle smoke keeps getting better all the way down to the final puffs. This is a very good tobacco for those who are first entering the oriental world...and a wonderful place to dwell, for those of us already there. Russ does it again !

and Orientals are forward in this and so it has that bready/verdant character which is supported by the latakia. I like the smaller proportion of Latakia... this is really well done. The cavendish contributes to a smooth, semi-sweet creaminess. I quite like this, but I much prefer the Bengal Slices Single Barrel. The Bourbon version takes this to a completely new level, and rates 5 stars ++. The nicotine in this is light and is around a 1 out of 5 level. It's one I choose for flavor... perhaps among the very best in flavor and it's certainly not a mixture I'd choose for a nicotine fix. Read Less

! Moved my rating up. The Belgain Malinois loves the black label. She jumps up in my lap, and daydreams with me.
I tried this method on the White Label too. Works better for me on these two tobacco brands.
Another trick I do now is take a smidgen of peanut butter in my mouth, when I change to another brand during the day. Seems to clear the palette, and give a blank slate. Try it out. Read Less

SO good. Dark and piney. Super woodsy and I don't want to turn anyone off of it, but there's a cooling effect that honestly makes it feel like wintergreen? But without the gross flavor. It's so good. Like skiing.

and nutty, with what I first thought was a peppery note but which I now think is a bit of spice from the Orientals that stays after smoking and leaves a nice lingering scent in the room, which my wife likes. This is all I feel qualified to say about it, and part of that is thanks to what I've learned from reading the notes made by others who kindly share their experience in their reviews. I'm an old guy and still somewhat new to the pipe, but whichever way you slice it, it's still damn good tobacco. How much is one's experience of the taste coloured by the pipe, whether it's briar, Meerschaum, or wormwood, etc? I suspect it's still a good taste, whatever the vehicle you choose. I'll give Bengal Slices 4.5 stars; would probably give it 5 if I were more sure of the validity of my opinion. What fun! Read Less

m, with notes of Anise or Licorice. I'm leaning toward Anise because sweetness (I detect more than a natural amount) and the lack of bitterness (or I detect a "normal" amount). Regardless, the flavoring gradually drops to the background by the 1/2 way point and remains a faint reminder. Taste is medium to full and very consistent, with complex notes of floral, sweet, anise, smoky, musty vegetation/hay, toast, spicy, wood, spices, savory, orange peel/zest, rich earth, mildly bitter, mild fermented sour, lemon grass, a tart and tangy citrusy herbal incense background note, and a moderately peppery retro. Latakia is leading with strong support from the Flavoring, Oriental/Turkish and Virginia. Black Cavendish gives minor support. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great. Read Less

it to Plum Pudding from Seattle Pipe Club, but I would actually rank it at least a tick above that particular blend. The use of orientals in this blend is just right, in my opinion, and there is a sweetness that comes through from the black cavendish, throughout the smoke, that doesn't restrain the latakia too much and melds the blend together quite nicely. It's certainly stood the test of time, if you ask me, and is well worth having a nice stock of for the cellar. Read Less

I like black liquorice so I like the topping and makes for a good english aromatic crossover. Latakia is quite present, and I liked the mild incense/flowery note on the retrohale from the orientals.

This was not the lat bomb that I was expecting. Not a bad smoke just lacked the heavy latakia flavor I love. The cake broke up nicely and it smoke cool.

The New Bengal Slices is a completely different Blend. It is a crumble cake, which is very nice for itself. The moisture is really perfect, dry enough to smoke. And it has a very different aroma. It smells and tastes a little bit like almonds, very smooth and soft, only little soapyness. The Latakia is well embedded, but in the background. Main roles are played by the Virginias and the aroma. It burns very, very well.
Well, it is of course a good blend. But not compareable to the old one. This one is much friendlier, easy, and well behaved.
