Pleasant all-day smoke

Mildly aromatic is pretty spot on. It's black Cavendish, Burley, and just a pinch of Latakia. The top note was dark fruit and some spice. I could make out the Latakia, too. Upon first light, the spice was strong, almost over powering. But then it mel... Read More
lowed out pretty quickly. There's some nice depth here with wafts of Latakia throughout the smoke. The fruit and liquor compliment the tobacco very evenly. It left little to no moisture in the bowl. Burned evenly to a nice white ash. Room note was pleasant to tolerable. Never bit or smoked hot. A very nice mellow smoke. I highly recommend it. Read Less

One caution: I bought a 12 oz. cannister of this because I liked it so much, but the 12 oz. cannister I received didn't smell or taste anything like the 1.5 oz. It was sour, dry, and stale. Sent it back for a replacement cannister. New 12 oz. was fine. If I had received the "bad" tobacco first, I probably would have never gotten to the "good stuff" and that would have been a shame. ia blends thinking of it as an English or English-Aromatic. It is far from English and not really a cross-over either. I felt I had been misinformed as to its goodness and set it aside for months. In the meantime, I finished the other Englishes and was making my way through several samples of tobaccos of old (Field & Stream, Kentucky Club, Sugar Barrel, Flying Dutchman, Barking Dog, Model, etc.). Sutliff, the makers of Edward G. Robinson, have a vast selection of match blends for many of these long-gone favorites and I haven't found one yet that I didn't like. After all that palate stretching it dawned on me, Edward G. Robinson has more in common with these old tobaccos than anything else. In this new light, it all made perfect sense... the easy-to-pack ribbon cut, the slightly drier leaf, the use of Latakia as a light condiment, the Burley base with a singular top note... this was a codger-style blend! As such it's very light, quite mild, and just an easy-going sort of tobacco that serves better as a snack than a meal. It is easy to light and keep lit. I can puff on it effortlessly and go about other projects without having to concentrate on nuances or complexity, and I kind of like that about it. It was tailor-made for that bygone era when smoking all day long was what pipe smokers did. As such, it couldn't have been a blend that would knock you on your butt after one bowl or nothing would ever get done. It is what it is, and that's okay. To put it respectfully, this is the sort of blend popular in the 1930s and 40s when Edward G. Robinson himself was in his prime. Since my revelation (no pun intended), I've enjoyed Sutliff's Edward G. Robinson's Pipe Blend on many occasions and if you take it for what it is, I think you could too. Read Less

o dry. It was better after that much drying. The topping or casing possibly the cavendish flavoring was quite dominant even when dried a bit. It’s a very nice aroma with some Burley strength. I have yet to taste the Latakia but then it’s said to be a condimental addition. It has a very mild flavor and wonderful aroma so I suppose it’s a true aromatic. It’s different and not unpleasant but as a Burley lover, it was a bit mild for me. It should be smoked slowly or it will get too hot but it’s easy to keep lit so smoking it slowly is pretty easy. I’ll finish the tin but it’s likely the only time I’ll buy it as it just doesn’t punch my buttons. It’s a nice large ribbon cut and has a persistent fruity aroma in the tin. Edward G. p front and adds body with its woody, nutty, and slightly dry mouthfeel, though the slightest of alkalinity brought to bear by the burley, is balanced by the acidity of the slightly sweet black cavendish and dark prune-juice topping. The black cavendish smooths out the roughness, and I can’t tell if it’s sweetened with the fruit juice or the entire mix is topped, but it really doesn’t matter as the prune juice sweetens the mixture and contributes to the balance. Also, was I’m wondering if ‘Black Spice’ was used in part of the black cavendish as I get a cinnamon or allspice note. Although there’s just a smidgen of condimental latakia, this blend would be unremarkable without it. The latakia is supportive and always present with the lightest campfire note in the background. It contributes, though in the slightest, a smokiness that brings the entire mixture together. Left out too long to dry and the mixture may turn sour. A slightly better than average blend that many burley lovers will enjoy, and most English preferences will find similar but recognizably American. Last evening, I was smoking Peterson's Early Morning Pipe and thought is resembled EGR in taste. I immediately popped the tin of EGR, loaded a bowl and smoked both. Yep... EGR and Early Morning Pipe taste very similar. Though with the inconsistency of EGR, don't rely on it as a substitute. It certainly won't age as nicely and the dark-fruit taste will morph into sourness instead of the sweetness you encounter in the Virginias present in EMP. Read Less

The wife, who is an asthmatic non-smoker, loves this blend. To her it smells like "warm happiness" with lower tones of dark fruit and Christmas spices. Add freshly baked bread, she says, and it would smell like a Hobbit hole.
I agree with her. While this is not my overall favourite blend (I enjoy Balkan blends like G.L. Pease's Blackpoint and Peterson's Old Dublin, straight Virginias like Newminster Flake and Capstan Blue, and

On smoking it, that flavor and many others come through: some alcohol hints that I can't put my finger on, and the fruit is there in the background like the lightest summer breeze that you barely notice on your skin. Quite enjoyable, complex enough to keep you guessing, yet simple enough to just smoke and enjoy without over analyzing it. It's definitely a keeper, not some goopy, heavy aromatic, but a melange of flavors that makes you want to come back for more. It could easily be a singular smoking experience for the whole day, or your only smoking experience if you like it. I think this blend deserves a wider audience. Difficult to keep lit. Bites and flavor mediocre at best. Wanted to like it but no matter what I did, the results were still the same.
