balanced nicely. I enjoyed the room note, as did others. The taste was divine. The Orientals, Latakia, and Virginias struck a nice balance. There was not bite, and I find this one of those blends that I can pack into my biggest bowl and savor for an hour, while I ponder the end of the day on my porch. I will definitely purchase this in the future. Read Less

This mixture is a complex and well crafted Latakia blend that is vibrant and not too heavy with an amazing aroma from fine Orientals, balanced with a bit of sweetness from the bright Virginias and just a touch of spice offered by the addition of Perique. um Opus” which by definition should be an example of an artist's work that best shows their talents and contribution to the art world, it is definitely worthy of our consideration for consumption. Magnum Opus is all about the subtlety. At first try, this may make you scratch your head. It's an English blend, for which Russ has created many others that smokers may consider his true Magnum Opus: tribute blends like WhiteKnight and BlackHouse, or revitalized blends like Bengal Slices and the John Cotton's blends...what a list! So why this one? The tobacco candy-store is full of lighter English blends which work great as a stepping stone toward better English blends after which aren't going to cut it. Rarely is a mild English done so well it's one you come back to time and again. Hearth & Home Marquee Series Magnum Opus is such a blend. The more time you spend with this, the more subtle complexity you'll discover and enjoy. This is one of the fullest flavored all-day smokes for English lovers. Having said that, it surprises me that a good friend of mine likes this one so much because he doesn't like Latakia blends at all. In fact, it's the only English blend I've ever seen him go back to by choice while all others taste “soapy” to him. I think this is the art of Ouellette's blends. It's such a workable blend it pleases just about anyone. This blend is expertly balanced with Virginia, Latakia, Orientals and Perique. The Orientals particularly give this an almost naturally aromatic note, and no other toppings can be detected. The Virginia provides all the sweetness keeping it light and airy, never bitey or harsh. And the Latakia is ever-present but never overpowering. The Perique however, is IMO, the binder that makes it all work so well (...and we know Russ knows his Perique). Without the slight richness of the Perique's fermentation this might seem more like a starving artist's work than the Starry Night that it is. This is a delightful blend. Enjoy. Read Less

dding gives me nothing but Latakia.
This is just another Latakia forward blend to me. Even the tin note is Latakia.
It's dry, almost crispy out of the tin. On the plus side it doesn't bite at all. It's mild, and I guess it can be an all day smoke for that reason alone. Maybe my taste buds or palate is fried. Nightcap did nothing for me either. Fortunately, I love Latakia, otherwise I'd probably dump this out in the trash.
The only blend I've ever had that had a great smell and taste was Frog Morton in the Cellar.
Magnum Opus? I don't think so. Closer to a rough draft.
I'll keep it jarred for a while and revisit it sometime. For now, I'll go back to the other dozen jars of Englishes I have. Or maybe I'll just buy some real dried fruit and eat it. Read Less

This seems to be a good blend but nothing is standing out to me. It is a bit sweet for my tastes so far I will switch though a few pipes and finish off the tin but so far not overly impressed and there for disappointed in the Magnum Opus.

Taste is medium and somewhat consistent, with complex notes of wood, smoky, spicy, musty herbal vegetation, tangy, floral, incense, savory, spices, dry earth, orange peel, fermented/vinegary fruit, a tart and tangy citrus background note, and a peppery retro. takia is definitely the primary mover yet the Orientals and Perique provide archetypal notes that balances out the smokiness of the Latakia which is a fine example of that leaf. The Virginias underpin the blend and hold it together. It's potent yet restrained leaving you with an overall smoking experience of balance. To me, all the elements are perfectly balanced which is the key to this Balkan. Nothing overwhelms whilst everything stands out. It is indeed a Magnum Opus . The nicotine hit to me is bold yet not overpowering . There's a reason Russ Outlette is considered a master blender and this is a primary example of the why. Read Less

It is definitely a signature blend. I feel a wave of glee as I plack the lat heavy and exotic Virginia’s into my bowl. It it’s a smoth satisfying smoke.
