Product: Seattle Pipe Club Mississippi River Special Reserve 4oz
I have yet to try the original blend, though I intend to soon, but I jumped on the opportunity to get the special reserve whole it was available. Upon opening the tin several months ago I was greeted with a pungent vinegar aroma that was dominant. ... Read More
I've heard of companies using vinegar as an antifungal agent, so I'm leaning towards that being the reason as it was a thick, dark and moist cake. Similar to deception pass in that regard. Both need considerable decanting time to truly enjoy the smoke. When smoked fresh it did irritate my mouth, so decant I did, opening my jar every few days to let it breath. Fast forward 6 months. Now we're talking. The vinegar smell has dissipated almost entirely and I get a rich Latakia and sweet virginia aroma. After loading a fat pipe I sit back to enjoy and I'm not disappointed. What greets me is a unique blend of Virginia, latakia, and perique in near perfect harmony. I can taste each ingredient individually, but it is so masterfully blended and married that none of the ingredients overpowers the next. Sweet and smoky Latakia is present but not overwhelming, and the perique is there to lend some dark fruit and spice, but the high quality virginias are the ties that bind MR. There is another blend out there with a similar flavor profile but I can't recall it, and honestly that says something about MR. Plum Pudding will always be the crown of my collection but Mississippi River special reserve earned a spot in my rotation for the foreseeable future. Time to stock up. Read Less

Balanced Complexity - Rich, Smooth, Slightly Sweet & Earthy

Product: Seattle Pipe Club Mississippi River Special Reserve 4oz
This is definitely the more complex and refined twin to Mississippi River (MR). While that blend is also a favorite, the exhibit different characteristics and qualities. First a description of the MR Special Reserve (SR). The real star for me is the... Read More
flue-cured Virginia, not because it is dominant, but for the way it provides a somewhat grass and citrus counterpoint to the slightly sweet and earthy red Virginia. The stoved Virginia is also slightly fruity, earthy, with fermented undertones. The Perique here comes across as a bit more sweet than savory, with hints of fig. The addition of the of flue-cured tobacco provides just enough tartness to both soften and highlight a blend that might come across more sweet. This blend is so well processed and blended that I can find nothing to critique after two complete tins. The Cyprian Latakia lends some smokiness that is more present in the first half of the bowl. Presented in an easily broken crumble cake, MRSR delivers a medium strength smoke with no bite or harshness, even as you near the bottom of the bowl. I do recommend giving this a bit of drying time. I tend to rub it out and load a pipe the night before I smoke. I also recommend at least a medium bowl to really appreciate what this blend has to offer. MR is equally complex and balanced, but the MRSR is richer and smoother. MR regular is slightly less savory, and the Perique seems to be more upfront than the MRSR. With MRSR you can detect all of the components with each puff. Both receive my highest recommendation, and suggest loading two pipes - one with each - to appreciate the differences. Read Less

Sweet sugary Virginia with some earth taste and some citrus in the background. The perique offers some spice with raisin and fig notes. The Cyprian latakia and Oriental add a sweet, musty, smoky woodiness with a slight sour hit here and there. Absolu... Read More

In my ever ending love for a Latakia I thought I would try this and I was not disappointed. It is so smooth and rich the room notes are nice and the burn is nice of you let it dry out a bit 10-20 mins as it comes very wet but read to put in a mason j... Read More
ar. The tin note is sweet and almost cake or fruit like. Comes in a semi hard plug. Easy to rub out. I have found that most Latakia Blends go great in churchwardens. As they are already a cool smoke this enhances their flavor, separating anything that is mixed with them giving it a greater complexity and makes it almost like flavored air. Read Less

I have been a longtime lover of Plum Pudding. It has been one of my top five tobacco blends for quite awhile. I just recently got around to pulling the trigger on Mississippi River and decided to go for the Special Reserve. Let me tell you, straight ... Read More
up, this stuff is awesome. The Virginias in this blend are incredible, some of the best I have ever smoked, and I believe a portion of them were very carefully stoved until black. Compared to Plum Pudding, it seems to me that the Virginias are obviously up front, the Perique is where you would expect the Orientals to be and the Latakia is in the background, lending the blend that smoky richness. The Orientals are aged bringing in that fragrant touch with a bit of butteryness. It’s just damn good tobacco harmoniasly blended. Rich, dark, and smooth with tons of flavor. Read Less
