is smoky with Latakia, but not overpowering. The plum flavor infuses every puff but as the blend ages the flavor lightens and evolves a little, and now it reminds me of a lighter version of the new Bengal Slices topping. There is a BBQ and savory note from what I assume is the Virginias, and the Turkish keeps it interesting but I can't say exactly what flavor it adds. This is one of the interesting things about plum pudding. Most of my smokes are highlighted by a beautiful medium Latakia smokiness overlaying sweet and light BBQ Virginia flavors, with the Cavendish being barely noticeable and not unpleasant. Sometimes the Virginia is more present in my smoke, even to the point of challenging the Latakia. In these cases it reminds me more of a fuller Frog Morton with less stoved VA. It's possible that these flavors can shift mid smoke. I don't say these things to discourage people. In fact, I thoroughly enjoy the nature of Plum Pudding and all it's flavors, and I think it's one of the finest pipe tobaccos out there. There was a time when I worried my changing tastes would betray me and I'd be stuck with a couple pounds of Plum Pudding rotting in my cellar. It turns out my worries are unfounded, and my appreciation for PP and the other SPC blends is stronger than ever. Plum Pudding is mild-medium in strength and nicotine, and though it has a mild topping the flavors are very natural. Plum Pudding can be an all day smoke for the seasoned smoker and repeatable for most. As is the case for most mottled flakes like PP, crumbling and packing the bowl lightly gives the best smoking experience. I'm going to smoke this blend side by side with the special reserve soon to get a clearer picture of the differences. As of now I can say that the special reserve is smoother, darker, and deeper of flavor, with significantly better Virginia and orientals. Does that mean it's better in every way? It's really hard to say no, because the special reserve is in my top three of all time. That being said, the original is different, and I still find myself smoking it despite having a large supply of special reserve. Read Less

hing notes are the Orientals and Perique? My nose is not yet so refined to say for sure. There is a sweetness to the scents as well, which I guess is the cavendish. In sum, the aromas are somewhat subtle; no one aroma oversteps the others except that the latakia calls the rest into line. This tobacco smells exciting.
Appearance in Tin: hunks of what looks like very thick cut flakes. Not sure how to approach these. I figure I’ll try gently rubbing-out one of these and loosely stuffing it in my pipe. The hunks look like pieces of a pressed-dried fruit bar.
Packing the Pipe: I’m smoking this fresh from the tin. The cake strips aren’t very moist. In fact, it was alarmingly easy to break up a bowl’s worth with just my thumb and index finger. I noticed that if I crumbled too hard, I would dust the product. I immediately emptied the tin into a mason jar. The moisture content is perfect for immediate smoking, but I’m afraid of letting it go much farther than that. I’m using a Medico Varsity Briar pipe with a bent stem, packed using the three pinch method, no filter.
Char Light: this tastes kind of like Dunhill MM 965 on char, but not as latakia forward. There’s also the pleasant twang of orientals hitting my tongue causing slight salivation, which makes me want more. My initial impressions on char-light are that I’m going to enjoy this bowl.
Relight & Smoke to Half: I love what the Orientals are doing for the smoke overall; they make the general latakia notes of this tobacco so much more exciting.
Conclusion: consistently delicious. The orientals, perique, and cavendish kept the latakias nuanced and exciting from start to finish. Read Less

it seems mild and weak overall. The Tobaccos don't have much kick and they really seem bland and cancel each other out rather than complement each other. The tin was a mess of crumbs and slices about a quarter inch thick and not really high quality looking leaf either. I'm not really impressed at all. When smoking it, I got nothing but the vinegar tin note for the first half of a bowl. Turning into a smokey bitterness. But it was mostly nothing more than a smokey mist of nothingness that I wish were gone. My first order also included the Amphora 5-Sampler pack, and the English Blend in that is even better than this Plum Pudding. I've tried this Plum Pudding in four different pipes now, in hopes one combination shows an improvement; including a Clay pipe. But it repeatedly gives me nothing to write home about. Sadly, before smoking the Plum Pudding for the first time, and based on reviews, I also ordered the SPC - Plum Pudding Special Reserve (awaiting delivery of it still). And I am now fearful it may also make it onto my "Never Again" list. I wouldn't recommend it, nor will I try it again. Did I simply get a bad portion of a batch in my 2 oz tin of slices? Because: "tasty, delicious, the best English, Plum flavor, too wet to stay lit, glorious, amazing, citrusy bouquet, and second to none (not true) is not what's in the tin that I received. If I had the tin I would send it back. Just to rid myself of it. *Edit*; on a hunch I phoned SmokingPipes and they said it shouldn't smell like that and they fixed it for me. So with that I understand what I received was plainly "not right." I do appreciate them at SmokingPipes; for their helpful customer service. One day, not far away, I'll try this blend again. In hopes I get a tin w/o fermentation issues...and reevaluate the star rating given today. *UPDATE* So I bumped my Star rating to near the average; in trusting those of you who didn't get a strong sour-vinegar tin of tobacco like I did. I bumped my rating up because SP took care of my bad tin, and I threw away my tin. But wanted to leave my review just to express my experience with it. I've yet got up the nerve to try another tin. But when I do, I will likely adjust my Star rating as I find necessary. Read Less

way by the blend. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of flavor. By that I mean it has a wide variety of flavor. However it was very very subtle and that is not a great thing for me. g a 2 yr old 8oz tin so this may have something to do with it's brilliant flavor. All I can say is, if you like a spicy full flavored English blend than this should be right up your alley! This is not an aromatic.... It's not even a cross over blend. This wouldn't be a good blend to travel with because there is some maintenance involved with rubbing out the thick chunks of cake but in my opinion it's well worth it and serves its purpose as part of the ritual we pipe smokers like so much, even when preparing the smoke. s hate it. One thing threw me off; I thought I was getting a proper crumble cake like C&D makes (a big pressed hunk of tobacco). Instead, P.P. is full of these 1/8th-inch-thick cake-flake hybrids. They have a grain so they're sort of like flakes. They look very nice; mottled in color with all five of its contents visible. The tin note is very nice as well; full of savory tobacco aromas, not just a Latakia assault. The new tin artwork is great—the one I got is not the style pictured above, but the far more elegant and more recent design (almost the same as the Special Reserve), which is a pleasant addition. It's just that the tin is too big for big for its contents; SPC should wrap these little cakes in paper so they're not banging around in the tin. That's my only big complaint--that and the small output. It'd be great if this was on hand more often! Read Less

Review of 8oz tin: I love this thick style of cut (I prefer large deep bowls). These large "slabs" are not pressed densely, thus are very easy to rub out. I find this to be the most satisfying Balkan I have tried thus far.

e unlike any I have had so far in my tobacco blend journey. I would say high medium on the flavor. Did not bite and had only a few relights. I think my sample might have been a little damp. I let it air out for about 20 minutes before packing my pipe so next bowl will get just a little more dry time to see if that makes a difference on the relight count. I could smoke this one all day. This a great blend to smoke around people, as it has a very pleasant room note. The only problem for me is that it is light in flavor. That lightness however does make it a great blend to smoke all day, and the flavor is superb enough to encourage this function. But if you smoke a bowl of something stronger prior to this blend, you may not get as much out of it. Read Less

to the blending. With the name PLUM Pudding (that's a hint, I think, of that secret ingredient) there is actually a slight sweet richness that remains from top to bottom of the bowl. I found that NOT rubbing it out too much helps the coolness and richness of the smoke. And that smoke is truly exceptional. The 'new' Bengal Slices crumble cake has a similar approach to the blending, too. Please do try this if you enjoy a thoughtful Balkan. And Aromatic smokers - this is a wonderful transition tobacco, to enter into the world of fine English tobaccos. Read Less

I'm not Latakia lover myself, but like to smoke Latakia blends from time to time just for some difference. My hand would reach this tobacco much more often than any other Latakia tobaccos I've tried so far.

deserve all the hype!! This is an awesome English blend! This has an amazing tin note, great smoky leathery Latakia, deep stewed fruits, sweet and spicey, earthy, and that tangy DFK bbq smell! Love it! And it looks like delicious beef jerky strips, I seriously want to eat it! It smokes cool and the aroma and flavor are ridiculous! It instantly joined the ranks of my other favorite English blends, Pirate Kake, Cerberus, Mississippi Mud, Old Ironsides, Black Frigate, Sextant, and a bunch of the Captain Earle’s blends! lance to Penzance, except the Latakia is not as pronounced. So, you get to enjoy the variety of the different baccys in the blend. You have to pay attention to get the nuances. It stays lit without relights. Even with packing your pipe tightly, the baccy remains springy, and provides a decent, yet not overpowering smoke. It creeps upon you as you puff. You do start noticing the Perique, the Turkish and the others without the slightest bit of overpowering the rest of the formula. Truly a remarkable blend. Wish I had tried some of Sutliff"s blends before. An easy going experience awaits even the novice pipe smoker. Strongly recommended! Read Less

um Pudding I was a little worried because there were hints of the grassy hay like barn yard that I found Squadron Leader to be. The delicate crumbly flakes were of the perfect moisture content right out of the tin. I loosely packed several chunks into my favorite broad and lit er up. This is very interesting tobacco. At times I get a perfume, incense like taste and smell. I like that and try to chase it through the bowl. At other times I get a cigar like taste and smell that I'm not overly fond of. Overall, I find this tobacco to be very pleasant. For me it stayed lit and burned to a dry white ash. In fact, my pipe emptied with a light tap, no dottle digging required. While this will not replace my favorite aros, it has made me appreciate what a really dedicated blender can do with high quality ingredients. Very very good. By the way, I tried to give this 4.5 stars but the software seems to have frozen at 3... Oh well, great tobacco. Read Less

k. He is an extremely abrasive weiseacer. Most people in the Pipe community are just about the nicest people you’ll ever meet. Not this guy, he is that kind of guy that you hope never moves in next-door to you or you never have to work with. That being said I know he has nothing to do with the production or manufacturing he’s just one of the head guys at the club and this should not be any reflection on Sutliff. But because of my experience with him I will never Buy another Seattle pipe club product. He’s a representative of the company and he represents them very poorly. On a sidenote I don’t care how good it is, $51 for 8 ounces of a Sutliff blend seems pretty steep. Read Less

So far, this is one of my favorite, if not my favorite blends. My only complaint is sometimes when I light it up, the first few puffs taste very acidic, like poison. Rest of the bowl is well-worth getting through the beginning though.

eef jerky--okay, keep in mind I am a new piper. In the can was about 6 slices of "beef jerky" 2.5" long and about 1/8" thick. I'm still amazed at the form of this tobacco. Enough about the form--I really enjoy this tobacco. I plan to purchase more. I heard the special reserve version of this tobacco is even better, but the price is about twice as much as this one, so I will likely stick with this one in the future. e strikes an incredible balance and actually has flavor. The smoke itself is velvet, thick plumes of light smoke, the after taste is almost nil, the room note as one friend, described it, old furniture. The tobacco taste is almost a sweet perfume, something ever evolving and you sort of chase it with each puff. Depening on your cadence the flavors will change, for me I;ve noticed short sips give good texture then one good drag and a retrohale give the best experience. For sure one to take your time with and really enjoy. I do not smoke this all day, but Ido smoke it at least one a day, and it does not overpower you, nic content is mild. One of the best tobaccos I;ve ever tried and if this was all I had to smoke, I;d be a happy piper. Read Less

al, but this is not that. Instead, this is a fine melange of interesting tobaccos giving a medium-strong smoke. A nice luxury balkan cake (if any of those tags mean anything to anyone), nothing more, nothing less. It much reminds me of some of the so called 'american' english blends and cakes submitted by C&D, but just without burley.. The latakia and perique are center stage here. The turkish is detectable but minor and the cavendish adds dimension to the smoke rounding it out nicely. Actually I also very much thought of Nightcap smoking this. Now, i'm no Nightcap addict, but i suspect the forlorn Nightcap aficionado would cherish this cake. I may actually like it better than nightcap, it seems not quite as strong. Read Less

of tobaccos is expertly and artfully combined to create a truly amazing crumble-cake, a perfect blend of smokey sweetness and spice. It’s smooth, cool burning, with lots of smoke, and tons of flavor right down to the bottom of the bowl and it burns down to a fine white ash. It crumbles so nicely, requires very little to no dry time, lights readily, and stays lit. Combining this many tobaccos without the blend becoming muddled is not an easy task. Joe didn’t just succeed at doing this, he has blended these tobaccos in such a way that they become something more. Like the instruments of an orchestra playing in harmony, a symphony of top notch tobaccos that hits all the marks. ks easily and works best for me by gravity feeding then a slight pack ontop followed by a sprinkling of finer bits as kindling.
The bowl smokes smoother then a babys bottom and is balanced amazingly. Initially i thought ok this blend is very nice but not game changing; i still somewhat think that, theres no one point you can stand back and say wow! However, after finishing a few tins i realised its amazing because theres no one stand out item in the blend. of tobaccos is expertly and artfully combined to create a truly amazing crumble-cake, a perfect blend of smokey sweetness and spice. It’s smooth, cool burning, with lots of smoke, and tons of flavor right down to the bottom of the bowl and it burns down to a fine white ash. It crumbles so nicely, requires very little to no dry time, lights readily, and stays lit. Combining this many tobaccos without the blend becoming muddled is not an easy task. Joe didn’t just succeed at doing this, he has blended these tobaccos in such a way that they become something more. Like the instruments of an orchestra playing in harmony, a symphony of top notch tobaccos that hits all the marks. It just can’t be improved upon in my opinion, except, of course, for the Special Reserve blend. It’s just that good. Read Less

etness mostly on the sides of the tongue. I like to use my churchwarden clinched in the side of my mouth so the smoke hits right on the side of my tongue.
About halfway through, after a couple tamps, the flavors concentrate and some complexity starts to swirl. Another very nice blend from SPC. Read Less
