I had been smoking Virginia/Perique flakes about 80% of the time for the last eight months or so before I discovered this tobacco. I love it...the change to something with a more basic pH gave me a bit of tongue bite, most likely because I j... Read Moreust couldn't stop smoking this from the moment I got it. I read a few forum reviews, and several guys recommended drying time for this blend. I dried it in a glass jar with the heat lamp from a wax incense burner inserted in the mouth, for about an hour, stirring the tobacco around about every 15-20 minutes to ensure even drying. When dried to the point that it feels almost too dry, as described in the reviews, it changed...and I mean unbelievably! It is now completely bite free, even smoother, and the aroma opened up to an absolutely mouth watering degree. This is without doubt one of my absolute favorites...I will most certainly be reordering this regularly and in a much larger quantity...I could almost smoke this and only this and be completely happy...and this coming from a man with over forty blends in the cellar at any given time! I would upgrade this to six stars if I could.
This tobacco is CLEAN. Really a no brainer if you like burley. My daily morning, and often all day smoke, is a 50/50 blend of Prince Albert and Carter Hall...been so for 28 years...nothing pairs better with a hot mug of coffee in the morning. Well, I can't wait until tomorrow morning. I bought a pound of this ERR match based solely on reviews, most stating how accurate of a match it was. I am an old codger at heart, I guess...so I took the plunge...and WOW...this is just plain good. Simple, couldn't be easier to pack, even burning, smooth as can be, and just plain satisfying. Great aroma...this just checks all the boxes. Unpretentious. A trip back in time, if you will...that aroma that made me fall in love with pipe smoking to begin with...this is a timeless tobacco.
It's not complex...but more important than that...it is just...comforting.
And at 2/3 the cost per pound compared to my daily standby...well...I have a feeling my morning cup of Joe may finally see a two tobacco rotation...if this doesn't end up taking its place.

I'm not a fan of most Burleys, so please take that into consideration. The casings and aromatic qualities are what really make me like this blend. My dad smoked the original back in the 50s and 60s and when I started smoking a pipe in the late 1970s, I naturally gravitated to what my dad smoked. It is a straight forward honest burly with just a light old school topping that brings out the nuttiness of the burly while adding a little bit of molasses to the flavor. The cube cut of the sutliff product is similar to the original as well. Although the moisture content is slightly higher than the original, I have no trouble keeping it lit and if you take your time, there is no tongue bite. Not long ago Lane Limited re-introduced the world to Ready Rubbed, a blend that is meant to be a replacement for the long gone Edgeworth Ready Rubbed blend. While that blend is a nice smooth, all day sort of soft Burley any fan can enjoy, it didn't b... Read Morelow me away the way this Sutliff's Match blend has. I'm not comparing either to the original Edgeworth as I haven't had it yet. But, of the two blends meant to be at least a tribute to Edgeworth's, Sutliff's version is the more formidable of the two. For starters, it is a different cut made up of little nuggets of flavor, similar to a chunky-cut flake that's been rough-cubed. The impression I get is a hearty and nutty Burley that even without the flavoring would still be enjoyable, but it is the flavoring where this match soars above Lane's version. The famous Edgeworth taste is a sort cocoa flavoring with a hint of brown sugar or molasses and perhaps a touch of anisette. If you are familiar with Sir Walter Raleigh original (which I also love), it is playing in the same ballpark on a different team. When I tried the Lane Limited Ready Rubbed, I liked it, in fact it was one of the first Burley blends I liked in my attempts to expand my palate. As I grew to enjoy other Burleys, like Solani's Aged Burley Flake for example, Lane's Ready Rubbed seemed lacking. Enter Sutliff as the remedy. This is both flavorful and pure slow-burning enjoyment. Sutliff has sourced Burley that seems to have a bit more nicotine oomph too. It is slightly harder to get lit, but once it's going, it lasts. The flavoring is most evident at the beginning, fading slowly through the bowl, but rather than die out leaving you with a bland, dull tasting tobacco, it becomes a nice Walnut sort of flavor that remains pleasant as you finish. As a rule, I'm less inclined to enjoy an aromatic that loses flavor quickly, but I don't consider this an aromatic. “Does it have a flavoring?” Yes, but lots of non-aromatics do. This is squarely in the Burley-based category and should be considered such. The flavor change is part of the journey, and one I'm happy to return to again and again. Enjoy. Read Less
