Sutliff: Crumble Cake Barrel Aged Series No.6 Phantom Privateer 50g Pipe Tobacco

Product Number: 003-442-0079

Each entrant into Sutliff's Crumble Cake series comprises tobaccos that have been treated with old-school aging and processing techniques, resulting in traditional blends rich with timeless flavor. The Barrel Aged series is the limited-edition iteration of the line, and each of its mixtures benefit from a longer, more involved aging process that includes its eponymous barrel aging. The sixth release in the series, Phantom Privateer marries earthy Red Virginias, mellow Black Cavendish, and spicy Perique from St. James Parish, marking the first appearance of Periuqe in the Crumble Cake series. The mixture is aged for 30 days in a rum barrel, adding a sweet and spicy complexity to Phantom Privateer. Then, the blend is pressed and sliced into a crumble cake that melds the rich flavors in delicious harmony, offering the appeal of an aged blend right out of the tin.

Yep I love the name, yep I love the tin art, yep I love the pirate theme, and yep I had to buy it, haharrrrrr! I’m a pirate nerd so I was sold instantly! I buy most pirate and nautical themed tobaccos, but that doesn’t always mean I love them all! I really want to love them all but sometimes I just don’t, like Sea Dog and Privateer by C&D weren’t my favorites, but I absolutely love Pirate Kake! So Phantom Privateer was an interesting one for me, at first I found it really peppery in my nose and it gave me a gnarly nic hit, also not much flavor. The tin note was delicious though, like a nice va/per but with some sweet rum! My next smoke was completely different and more enjoyable, it was smooth, good aromas, sweet flavors, really mellow, no nic hit, just a lil spicey and peppery in my nose, just awesome! And every smoke since has become more and more enjoyable! Just goes to show you how different your smoking experiences can be and it’s always good to keep trying a new tobacco and really give it a chance! Who knows this might even get bumped up to five stars soon! Cheers!...Read More

Tin note of sweet fruity raisins. Tobacco is a Cake of brown, yellow brown and dark brown. Moisture content is ok. Some may prefer to dry it a bit. Cake breaks apart and rubs out easily. Burns slow with a few relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild to medium. Flavoring is mild, with notes of sweet rum, though the sweetness remains after the short-lived rum. Taste is medium and very consistent, with notes of tart and tangy plums, sweet floral grassy, spiced raisin, very savory, mild sour vinegary, bread, burnt sugar, earthy and woody, very mild bitterness, a citrus background note, and a moderately peppery retro. Virginia is leading with Perique supporting and being tamed by the Stoved Burley. Room note is tolerable to strong, and aftertaste is great....Read More

Dr. Heckles... first to have perique in the "barrel aged" limited edition. Instead of being negative, try reading 🤷
Good enough, but not very strong for an amateur.

strong aroma when you open the package when lighting less fragrant. Chicken is easy to feel good. Rum has some pleasant notes of spices, it smells good, but it is not highlighted and not strong, that is, it is very weak, good for novice smokers. But at the same time, I still like it, because with a large bowl it will be enough to smoke and quite tasty and interesting tobacco....Read More

Have already gone through a tin. May me biased due to rum. But all in all it was everything I expected and more. Wish it could be a constant, but should have enough to last awhile. Well done!
Well--at least I gave it a fair trial

I am generally an English Lat-forward smoker with an occasional fling into the VaPer world. Feel like using pistol ammunition metaphors to evaluate this blend... I used multiple pipe shapes from bent Rhodesian and Bulldog to straight shank Billiard to Reverse Calabash to Captain Warren. Some pipes were cleaned and reamed, some were grabbed out of rotation. Filling technique varied from traditional to parfait to air pocket. The results were the same. Phantom Privateer smoked hot, peppery is an understatement. At first, I thought it was the method used for "krumbling", upon reflection (and afrer opening another crumble cake blend) I realized I did nothing different with Privateer. The blend is, generously, akin to an overly tannic very young red cabernet that puckers one's mouth. And this observation gives rise to a suggestion...it might need some aging. I did buy two tins. I'll let the other tin sit for a bit...maybe a half-year, and report back. Of course, IMHO/YMMV...Read More

Got a few since it's limited edition, and first time ever think I got too many. Probably won't smoke them. The first several puffs - very hot and peppery, like a hot steam. Well, maybe I should have dried it a bit. But still, Virginia at it's worst, plus too much perique. Hotter than "the Beast". And - the bite. By middle of the bowl - some savory note, but still - nothing special. I guess, fits the tin art - rough, rude, and brutal. Not a lot of nic. I assume, cellaring for good few years will make it more tolerable, but obviously it will never become a thing.
P.S. the first try was a small sample in a tiny pipe. I guess I just got a chunk of perique that time. Second time - full size bowl - not as bad. Typical navy blend alike windjammer. Not worth the $16 price, but we'll, smokable.
