Disappointing

It is typical red Virginia, pardon the oxymoron. Usual red Virginia taste with its dark overtones. It is not sweet. Burns rather slowly. Taste is consistent from the beginning to the end. Strength wise it is closer to mild than medium. It is not pipe dependent. Tasted pretty much the same in briar or meerschaum regardless of pipe shape. I found it monochromatic and quite honestly boring. I do believe it would be better used for blending and mixing rather than smoked straight. Since the demise of McClellands I’m looking for the substitution for my favorite straight Virginia blends. Unfortunately, this one will not do. The search will go on....Read More

I gave this a try based on the reviews I saw. Very very disappointed. Out of the tin it was a bit more moist than expected, as many others have noted. So after breaking up the cakes last nite I let it air dry for about an hour +/-. This afternoon I loaded up an Italian poker; relatively deep. For at least the top half of the bowl it smoked hot; hot on the tongue. No discernible taste to me; none of the others in the lounge noted much aroma. Just not my cup of tea. Not surprising given that I usually am drawn to English blends and even more so to Balkan blends. I will say the rest of the bowl did smoke down to mostly gray ash; a bit of dottle. But as to taste? Nothing really discernible. No, I will not be buying a pure red virginia again. Experiment not a failure; confirmed for me not my cup of tea!...Read More

Tin note of pungent sweet, vinegar and sugar. Tobacco is a Krumble Kake of reddish brown with flecks of tan. Moisture content is good. Kake breaks apart and rubs out easily. Burns slow with a few extra relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium and very consistent, with notes of sweet bread, tart and tangy stewed dark fruit, very savory, wood, floral hay, spices, sugar, vinegary fermented sour, citrus, slightly acidic, a lemon grassy background note, and a peppery retro. I got this on a whim, because Sutliff can be a little hit or miss for me. This one is a solid hit! Nice complexity for a straight Virginia, & I love it with my morning coffee. I've smoked it in many different pipes, but my Comoy's 87 Zulu gave the best smoke especially when you leave it a bit chunky. This helps to keep the burn slow and the smoke cool. I’m new to pipe smoking but have hit it hard right out of the gate and really enjoy it. I have about 12 tins of different assorted tin pipe tobacco’s and about 12 bulk tobacco’s that I’ve been trying to find my preferred tobacco. I can say honestly that this is my favorite so far! Absolutely amazing taste. It’s zesty, tangy, fruity, slow burning, relaxing with no tongue bite. This is by far the most interesting tobacco I’ve smoked. I will be buying much more. I’ve been a pier for the better part of 16 years, on and off through periods. Over time I have made the mistakes all pipers make at the start, leading me to not really appreciate the finer points of tobacco. After learning how to puff using the re-Breathe method, this tobacco just opened up a whole new experience and love of the hobby for me. Immediately, the tin note has a strong apple cider vinegar note that compelled me to pack a bowl immediately. I was worried it might be too wet, but rubbing out the cake was just enough. Upon first light, I get a bold sweetness that reminds me of fresh sourdough rolls. That comes and goes, and is always a pleasure. Throughout the smoke, the Virginias are soft and mellow, no bite in my experience. The nicotine hit isn’t much, but it does the trick. Burns cool and smooth, clean white ash with little moisture. A very pleasant smoke for me. I will buy as many tins as I can....Read More
