Eastfarthing, unoriginal, in the best way
April 16, 2021
Product: Sutliff Eastfarthing 1.5oz
I am almost uncomfortable spending the entirety of this review of Eastfarthing talking exclusively about Frog Morton. Almost. The reality is that the only reasonable reason for interest in this blend is that you miss that poor dead little green basta... Read More
rd so much that you are still looking for his replacement more then half a decade after his passing. Yet, you have most likey forgotten what you are replacing as you throw another empty tin of Plum Pudding over your shoulder.
The memory of Frog Morton being plentiful is a painfully delicious bit of nostalgia that many pipe smokers wallow in. Some fans of the defunct brand even have a tin laying around that they pick up and look at, just to feel it in their hands. If this happens with you, you likely find yourself grasping at your unopened precious from 2015 WAY too much. Despite this, unhealthy, love affair with Frog Morton, It is often forgotten that the popular Frog was an 11 dollar tin, who’s topping “magically” never dried out, even though you will swear it was made using only the best ingredients and the oldest of tobacco making processes. The “ you” of ten years ago would punch the “you” of four years ago right in the face for even considering paying 100 bucks for a tin on eBay. The “you” of today has become so throughly demented that you are livid that eBay’s tobacco ban won’t allow you to spend 500 on a wiff of it right now.
You silly, love sick , SOB. There will never be a replacement for THE Frog. Nope, not for you. You don’t miss the tobacco. You miss the experience of pulling the tab on a fresh can after buying 3 for 30. You miss your first all day smoke, every day smoke. Most of all, you miss falling in love for the first time. That only happens once , you hopeless romantic. Even if we went into Frog Morton’s cellar, dug him out of the ground, and brought him back to life, it would still not be enough. You put that Frog on a pedestal so high up he wouldn’t survive the fall in 0 gravity.
HOW-EV-ER, IF you are actually looking for the closest blend you can get to the original Frog Morton. Eastfarthing is the blend to try . It is BY FAR the closest tasting blend to Frog Morton I have had post Frog-Mortem. It is markedly sweeter though, the vanilla topping is easily picked out by the smoker and whomever may be close to your puffing. It is a pleasant room note. It still hits all the favor stops and burns through the bowl in the same way as your old mainstay. It is a fun, unpretentious, uncomplicated tobacco...Uncomplicated, you remember, like you used to be, before you had a pipe rotation for every hour of Christmas Day. Read Less

Eastfarthing consists of red Virginia, stoved Burley, and aged Cyprian Latakia with a touch of Vanilla (liquor?) topping. It’s a beautiful ribbon cut blend consisting of mostly brown, dark brown, and black tobaccos with the occasional bright golden r... Read More
ibbons, too. The moisture content is as close to perfect as one can get. After opening the tin, one would probably need to jar it so it doesn’t dry out too much.
The first thing I get from the tin is a deep vanilla scent — like a french vanilla. And maybe just a hint of cocoa that adds to the depth of the vanilla. Then there’s a deep, damp, earthy smell. I really can’t smell any of the Latakia. Overall I find the tin note very pleasant.
As I found the moisture content to be spot on, I didn’t let it dry any before loading my pipe. Of course, there might have been a very slight drying to it since I popped the tin the previous afternoon, but I really couldn’t tell it. I smoked this in my Peterson’s Mark Twain; it’s a System pipe. Eastfarthing packed well and took to the flame without issue. There were no issues with neither the charring (or false) light nor the true light.
The taste was nice, too. Nothing too harsh; a mild to medium taste that was similar to the tin note but only barely. I got some wafts of incense from the Latakia that were all but absent from the tin. Comparing this to their 504C, I would say 504C is stronger in the flavor department with more Latakia coming through.
The nicotine feel is very mild. As I was smoking this first thing in the morning with only some coffee as my companion, I was expecting more of a “nic-hit.” I’m pretty much a lightweight when it comes to nicotine so I was expecting that familiar, but unwanted, dizzy feeling — it never visited me. There’s virtually no tongue bite or harshness with this blend.
Eastfarthing burns down to a nice white ash with virtually no moisture in the bowl. All in all, it’s a mild to medium blend which could very easily be an all day smoke. Read Less
Great Crossover

Product: Sutliff Eastfarthing 1.5oz
This is the perfect crossover blend. Creamy with awesome taste and room note. Tried this on a whim and I keep ordering more and more. This is easily my go to blend now. It’s a cheaper blend too which is nice as well! Try it!!
Great Aromatic

Product: Sutliff Eastfarthing 1.5oz
If you are looking for a great aromatic where the natural tobacco flavors still shine through, than look no further. It’s deep and smoky with the Latakia. The casing tastes like vanilla, dark chocolate and nuts. Highly recommend

This blend is like an old friend waiting for you right where you expect to find them.

red virginias are present, but only in a background role, they add a very subtle tartness to the end of the draw and provide a robust flavor that compliments the burley and latakia nicely.
The latakia is dancing around with both tobaccos, adding its unique smoky qualities and a tinge of charred leather.
Then the topping, a sweet and balanced vanilla that's present all the way down but tapers off toward the last third of the bowl. It's soft and reminiscent of many fine blends and the room note is very pleasant.
The components meld together perfectly, this blend is silky smooth, rightly sweet and retains a certain amount of stoutness throughout the smoke.
Will definitely be buying alot more of this in the future to have around, Sutliff did it right with this one. Read Less
VERY close to Frog Morton

Product: Sutliff Eastfarthing 1.5oz
A bit sweeter, lighter and the room note is most certainly better than Frog Morton. This lacks the body of the stout VA that FM provided, and the latakia is in smaller proportion that FM. BUT, I like this better. FM left me with a creosote tongue a... Read More
nd the vanilla in FM was very slight - almost drowned out by the higher latakia. This is a sweeter, bolder tasting vanilla with a lighter latakia presence. That latakia that plays in the background compliments the vanilla so very well. It leaves a sweet finish in the mouth and the room note is a sweet vanilla note with a slight cedar fragrance. Mixing this with a little Sutliff 507-S Stoved Virginia provides more body, nicotine and depth of flavor, though you sacrifice what little Latakia is there. Nicotine is 1 out of 5. Read Less

ont find to be a bad thing. The smoke is thick and creamy and best of all it stays cool down to the last puff. I enjoyed this in a 121 ex large pot. I was able to freight train the whole bowl like a mad man. The bowl seemed endless as it burns slowly. English lovers could find something to enjoy with this blend and even newer pipe smokers looking for a crossover. This will be in my rotation and may even become my only aromatic worth reaching for. I think it has spoiled me and ruined my idea of what an aromatic should be. Read Less
Nice Tobacco to try

UPDATED:
SECOND REVIEW:
So far, I've tried this fresh out of the tin and dried it for two days sitting on a paper towel (yes, it sounds barbaric). Fresh out of the tin, the Latakia was strong but less loud than Bengal Slices. The taste was very leathery, with sweet vanilla cream and chocolate milk, and it had a peppery throat kick by the bowl's end. When I tried it dry, the latakia was barely present - just a subtle whisper of leather in the background- and it tasted dark chocolatey with a more robust molasses bbq taste. I LOVE THIS BLEND! I was iffy about Bengal Slices (it was too floral tasting, imo), but this one smoothes out all the roughness of that blend. I smoked this in a Meer when out of the tin - it burned beautifully; I only had to relight it once. To me, the room note smells awesome - it doesn't overpower the room with a "campfire" or incense scent like Bengal Slices - it just smells like a sweet bbq sauce. Read Less

I've seen over their absence. Just as I was getting in to pipe smoking (some time in 2016 IIRC) McClelland and Dunhill both closed their doors. With many people commenting on the similarities, perhaps now I can understand what everyone was talking about a bit better. Read Less

riot.
SP categorizes this an aromatic, I would categorize it as an English Aromatic. If you are an aromatic smoker that is looking to explore English blends, I think this would be a great crossover.
The top of the bowl smokes very cool, sweet, and light. The stoves burley creates a cool, dense, and creamy smoke, much like a Cavendish. Flavors of whisky, vanilla, and something like raisin coat your tongue with every puff. Not a Latakia bomb in the least, very balanced and light. As you get towards the middle of the bowl out comes a brown spice note that complements the sweet whisky and vanilla notes very well. Towards the end of the bow the spice note turns a bit more peppery and tingles the tongue a bit, though not in a biting way. The whisky note becomes more of a sweet cereal flavor towards the end of the bowl. Overall an extremely pleasant smoke. Read Less
