Sutliff: Great Outdoors 1.5oz Pipe Tobacco

Product Number: 003-442-0003

It's perhaps ironic that a blend named Great Outdoors should be appreciated for its room note. Room note aside, most any sportsman will find this Sutliff Aromatic Mixture of Burley, Virginia, and Black Cavendish to be good company when outside. The perfect companion, in fact, for snowy winter days, for warm spring nights, for lazy summer mornings, and for crisp, splendidly-colored autumn afternoons.

In my opinion, this is the best of this series from Sutliff. Great Outdoors has a wonderful burley flavor profile with hints of anise, wood, nuts and earthiness. I absolutely love this blend.

This is a good modern alternate for the old Field and Stream. I actually prefer this over the Sutliff F&S Match. The anise flavoring is done well without being overbearing. As others have said it's a top notch OTC burley forward blend.

When opened tin nite is similar to whiskey and some spices ( anise), not too try, neither too wet just the way I like it. Pretty soft, it’s not too heavy also not heavy on toppings and aromatic stuff. Similar to Molto dolce but softer and less sweetness. Come in chunks / crumble
This is for licorice lovers

Not Great... but Not Bad

There's so many other, better blends out there. If you crave the anise and birch root, seek Mixture No 79,
It's better than this in that regard, and much sweeter than Great Outdoors. This has a moderately stronger anise and perhaps a little yellow birch flavoring to differentiate it from others
, though not as strong as No 79. It lacks depth. It has some broken flaked pieces of burley in there too. Good room note and light bodied. There's something else in the room note... I've smelled it in the ACID cigar line too.. something botanical and almost perfumed. The finish leaves a lingering freshness with a light sweetness. Not one I'll reorder and a prime example of a blend smoked one time and the last time. Nicotine is 1 out of 5....Read More

I was looking forward to trying this blend for awhile. I was attracted by the "Burley, Black Cavendish and Virginia" components. Unfortunately I somehow overlooked the "anise/licorice" comments. Tin was damp, but no problem lighting nor keeping lit. But the topping is strong, and to me unpalatable. I am only two bowls in, but I don't see taking a third. It also severely ghosted my pipe. I may end up dumping the rest. At least it was inexpensive....Read More

Aromatics tend to get a bad rap but I always believe there is a good and bad in any category. This is a very good example of an aro. The tin note is woodsy with a nice anise/licorice sent (which I love and not every does) and gives it that "root beer" aroma. The tobacco in tin isn't a saturated mess, in fact its quite dry compared to other coated ribbons. It lights easy and stays lit when packed right. The room note is pleasant, woody, and a slight sweetness that isn't overpowering. You get more of the vanilla in flavor with the licorice taking a backseat. Again subtle sweetness and not overdone. Sipping slow you will taste the burley come through. I will be keeping this in my rotation and will definitely be accompanying me on some camping trips....Read More

A very interesting and understated blend. Great textured cut. Good dryness. Not cloying with only a subtle sweetness. And a great root beer aroma. Just an all-around remarkable blend.
