Astley's began as tobacconist located in the upscale shopping district of Jerym Street in London. They contracted pipe makers such as Dunhill, James Upshall, L&JS, and Bill Taylor of Ashton Pipes to make pipes for them, while they mixed fine tobaccos. With deep flavored, heat-cured, naturally fermented and matured Black Cavendish, Astley's No. 88 Matured Dark Virginia is rich and complex.

Tin note of fermented vegetation, dry hay and cooked sugar. Tobacco is a ribbon cut of black and dark brown. Moisture content is great. Burns slow with few relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is mild to medium and very consistent, with notes of toast, wood, spice, floral, hay, creamy, savory, sugar, fermented sour, stewed dark fruit, bready, grassy earth, orange peel/bitters, acidic, a zesty tangy citrus background note, and a peppery retro. I took a chance on this and when first opened it resembled a raisin odor, but it is a fine smoke. Their are some "notes" absent that are in other tobaccos but that means smooth and nice in this case
