Brebbia: Balkan 50g Pipe Tobacco

SO, I EMPTIED 4 TINS INTO A MASON JAR. 8 MONTHS OF AGING HAS SMOOTHED THIS BALKAN, INTO A SOOTHING TASTY FRIEND OF MY PALATE.

This blend is supremely unique in that it lacks Virginia tobacco, which usually causes tounge bite, at least to me. I think there should be more tobaccos like this willing to go out on a limb and try something that few would dare. It is a pleasant Balkan style blend with plenty of flavor.

Smooth, low temperature burn. Dark and smoky. If you like English blends, this is definitely worth a try.

I enjoy English / Balkan blends a fair deal, they are the go to for much of my escapes into contemplation. This one, Latakia is smooth and it's herbalness is subdued, some spice from the Orientals, to me like a nutmegness to it, depth from the dark fired leaf and a nice "funk" notes every now and then from the Perique. The tin note is extraordinary. Beneath the terpene of the latakia is a profound sweetness on the nose. This is a one light tobacco that burns to the proverbial white ash. It is sweet, sour and salty all at the same time. It produces ample pillows of smoke. For a balkan blend the perique is particularly in evidence and there must be a fair whack of it in the blend. I tend to measure these kinds of blends against what I consider to be the gold standard, Penzance. I found the Brebbia Balkan to be actually a bit smoother than Penzance but lacking that oriental zing that one finds in Penzance. However, I enjoyed this blend immensely, finding it to be to my taste more of a classic English blend than a Balkan. But then my taste buds are a tad old! Anyway, I now have Brebbia Balkan in my tobacco rotation and happy to have it there. If you are looking for a mild to medium English blend smoke, I don't think you can do better than this Brebbia blend which, I believe, is actually made by Dan's and could, in fact, be Dan's Bill Bailey's. I find this tobacco hits all the right notes for me. There's a lot going on and yet flavors here are perfectly balanced. Campfire and floral notes seem to be most forward, but there's also this savory sweetness of lightly spiced prunes right there and it all just really works well for me. I almost knocked off a star because I was finding that it had a tendency to be rather harsh on the nasal cavity, but after smoking it through one of my favorite pipes (the Vauen Fuji 4242) using a 9mm filter, I was able to fully enjoy it. Burns well (a few lights along the way) and stays flavorful throughout, not losing any of it's qualities towards the end. Really good stuff. I have smoked so many balkan blends most of them all start tasting the same. It is a nice smoke but, nothing really stands out that would put it in my top 10. Still quality and nice to have in the cellar but, I won't be reaching for it any time soon as there are others that are flat out amazing *cough* *cough* sasieni *cough* that are asily available and way better!
