ldnt put my finger on. Opened the bag and this blend just shook my hand. The Burley mixed with this deertongue was crazy. And, I had never smelled deertongue until I opened the bag. Awesome. Scooped and gravity filled a cob. Burns a bit warm, so I slow rolled it. Some think this is mellow, but for me, the burley is like a bear pawing at you, whilst also medicating your wounds with this herbal, vanilla type salve. Damn. This is going to sound as interesting as my review, but I judge tobaccy' on two grounds. 1., the taste. 2., how it smells residually in my moustache. Weird? Maybe. But this smell that sticks to you, is one of the finest things I have ever experienced. Reminds me of a cross between the old Teaberry gum, and angel farts. If you arent a fan of Burley, hold off on this. BUT, if you want to sac up and embody the soul of one of the most sweet voices of all time, and enjoy a bit of a challenge, this is it. Oh yeah, the room note is just unreal. Get at it or dont. There is no middle ground with this blend. Personally, Im sold on it. Read Less

hat people didn't like the fact that the burley can bite. Yup, that's true, mild tasting burley (which this is) can really bite you if you attack it. And the vitamin N content can sneak up and whack you over the head also. but if this one is biting you then check your technique, because I found no bite whatsoever.
And I red a couple who didn't like the deer tongue taste, okay I can understand that, I don't care for Lakeland essence. In fact if the Lakeland blends tasted like this I would smoke them and enjoy them... they don't, I don't. .. 'nuff said.
This won't be my all day smoke, maybe not even an everyday smoke, but I think I will making sure to have it around for a great change of pace smoke. Read Less

ubtle and enjoyable scent and flavor. I would describe that flavor as jasmine tea with milk and honey. I only have an ounce of Crooner, but will surely stock it among a very select few aromatics on my shelf. If you order Crooner ask for double baging and keep it away from other tobaccos as the fresh deer tongue is very pungent. In my opinion, Crooner is most enjoyable when it is quite dry and the scent of the deer tongue has mellowed. Read Less

. I can't get enough of it. Some say it gives a hint of vanilla. Others such as myself, say it's indescribable. Something I've never experienced before. The room note isn't bad, but is not like a aromatic. Very retro "grandpa's pipe" smelling tobacco, with a hint of cigarette, due to the burley. Which I actually love. It is strong. It does have a good Vitamin "N" hit. It does give a burley bite, but not in a bad way. The tin note is very pleasing and reminds me a lot of a box of raisin bran cereal. I'm a fan of Bing and I'm a fan of "Crooner". Get this and you'll be crooning in no time! Read Less

he flavor is plain Burley with a grassy herb twist and no more; its casing rounds it out but is ultimately very light. The deertongue is not too strong in flavor or content. A note of vanilla has been mentioned by others but I don't taste it. There's a definite "Old World" feel to Crooner. Imagine Carter Hall with a lighter casing and a smell and a note of an alfalfa-like herb. There's a hint of cigarette here too, but it's not crazy. Because of deertongue, the room note is also unique, but most non-smokers typically don't like it; the tin note is a different story. It's easy to see why fresh deertongue plants were used as air fresheners by the native Americans and settlers centuries ago. I'd imagine natives and the early settlers would've been familiar with a combination like this. Overall, I like Crooner, but I prefer more depth—it's a bit too plain for my everyday smoking preferences. With all that said, it's absolutely worth a try if the aforementioned characteristics sound good to you. As with all of my reviews, I'll rewrite it when I smoke more over time, and also after I smoke C&D's other deertongue blend, Gentleman Caller. Read Less

n color) that were accompanied by light green flecks of Deertongue. Those were the days.
It took practice getting a pipeful of Crooner properly packed; simply loading the bowl full of cubes was foolhardy. But in time, I discovered that placing a few whole cubes at the bottom and packing the remaining two-thirds of the bowl with the mixture well rubbed- I discovered that Crooner rewarded the effort with a pleasant smoke that was spicy, but burned consistently and resisted clogging, due to the whole cubes placed at the bottom.
Unfortunately, the consistency of the Crooner is no longer what it once was (or at least what I received was a far cry from the old Crooner.) If you’re not familiar with what cubed Burley looks like, I would have told you (years ago) to go to your local drug store and pick up a bag of “Half & Half.” Despite what the description of Crooner might lead one to believe, it is no longer what I would call “cubed” or even cube-cut for that matter. The 8 ounces of bulk Crooner I received for my birthday was what I’d call “granulated” at best. It’s still flavorful and exotic (due to the Deertongue) but it’s no longer capable of providing the same experience because there are no cubes of Burley left to speak of.
If you’re a fan of Burley and find yourself fascinated by Deertongue in tobacco blends, it’s still a must-have. But if, like me, your last batch came from the hands of Mr. Tarler himself- you’re in for a shock. All I can say is- smoke slowly, pack your pipe lightly and tamp carefully or else... Read Less

o. I think what I like about it lies in its simplicity. You have a great cube-cut Burely (with dreamlike mechanics) and just the right amount of natural condimental Deertongue and that's it! It's no surprise the Burley steals the show. It is a full-bodied Burley that's creamy to a fault, but the Deertongue adds a balanced sweetness that is crucial to the flavor of Crooner. My first time having Crooner I went on a binge and didn't want anything else, that's how good it is! Eventually, it was just too much Burley too often for me and I had to ween myself off, but I do still enjoy a bowl from time to time. Some guys claim this is there go-to blend and it's not hard to see why. And, no, you don't have to smoke Crooner from a Savinelli Bing's Favorite, but hey, if you got one.... Read Less

Product: Cornell & Diehl Crooner Bulk
s provided to Cornell & Diehl this recipe of Bing’s all-day favorite blend, and we know C&D isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
The cube cut format ensures Crooner smokes easy and uniform down to its ashy end. The addition of Deertongue herb is what makes it rich and unique, as C&D delivers a pleasantly pungent room note and a flavor both woodsy and nutty (with the burley) and fused with, via the Deertongue, vanilla and something faintly buttery, or of buttermilk.
Like so many old-school Irish-Americans and Irishmen of his generation, Bing enjoyed a tobacco pipe. But he was one step further in that he was truly a passionate pipester, and so many photos through the decades captured him puffing away at so many pipes. I like to think that when that heart attack felled him on that golf course in Spain in 1977, he was puffing this very blend in—of course—one of his long-shanked Canadian smokers.
In every smoke session with this timeless blend, my thoughts return to that timeless crooner, his voice as strong and rich as his favorite tobacco! 4.5 stars. Read Less

York meadow-y taste and nose. Room note is unobtrusive.
That last statement is the crux of my problem with Crooner. Like Der Bingle…Crooner is just too laid back. See—I’m one of those Lat-forward English blend folks. In abject glorification of Sherlock Holmes, I smoke Latakia straight up, none of this tippy-toeing around as blending tobacco.
Crooner is good and I’ll recommend it to anyone. No bite and stays lit nicely. It’s so…Holiday Inn-ish.
Philistine-like it may be, I’ve decided to work up a blend using Crooner as the predominate base and add a goodly portion of Perique—thinking along the lines of a 2:1 Crooner/Perique ratio.
Giving Crooner 4.5—great blend, just sorta loses some tenths of points on the dismount. Read Less

You have to smoke it slow or it will develop cigarette-like characteristics, but if you go easy, the Burley is nutty, with cocoa overtones that are complemented by the vanilla notes of the deer tongue. like crazy. Just a really unpleasant first experience. But in the name of fair play I soldiered on. After the initial torching of my face this did settle down some.I can't say whether it was the deer tongue that caused it it to be so acrid or the burly. But in my experience Burly is usually pretty smooth. I could taste the faintly taste the vanilla of the deer tongue and I liked it, along with another herbal quality I couldn't put my finger on. My pipe went out so I lit up again. Same torching of the face and nostrils. I tried getting through it but called it quits. I've never done that with a pipe tobacco before. Besides the acrid smoke it actually smoked really cool. I've never been a cigarette smoker but I have smoked cigarettes on occasion. This was like finding a dried up crispy cigarette in your jacket and trying to smoke it. Just did not bring anything to the party. No complexity at all for me. Just tasted like burning. If Bing smoked this regularly he was The Man because I couldn't get through one bowl.

I get a light sweet vanilla-esque flavour on the retro-hale, but the actual mouth flavour is more akin to somewhere between natural and cough syrup cherry.
