able bowl last evening. First off, I love everything Cornell And Diel offers. Never had a bad tobacco. And the same holds true here. It’s good quality tobacco. I never doubted Jeremy and his sorcerers and C&D when I bought my ounce for their cauldron type blending. The tin note…oh my, wonderful. Smoky, wine, tangy, slight yeast…just delectable. That’s what bought me that oz. Now the smoke. Immediately, I was hit with Latakia. It was actually a bit overwhelming at first but it settled down and definitely pulled in some fine orientals and Virginias albeit briefly. It got my hopes up. But there was something lacking. I picked up no stone fruits. Nothing else of great variety and if it was there, it was brief and I forgot. I expected more depth. I sipped it slow. Still more Latakia. Those other tobaccos just kind of fell away for most of the bowl. The Latakia was Much more than the tin note told me. Hmmm….again, it’s good Latakia but it overshadowed the rest of the blend for A majority of smoke. It needs to age in my opinion to calm that Latakia and it needs to blend more in a jar. But that’s the thing with small batch series….we can’t afford to figure out if we like it and what it needs. It should just be ready to smoke and not “wait” for it to get better. It’s a limited release. It shouldn’t need to age. I was able to get very little tang, none of those dark Virginias. Orientals seem to take a back seat here and that surprised me because if you smell the tin note, you aren’t expecting Latakia to take the lead. I don’t think it’s bad blending, I think it just needs to age. And that’s where it falls short for me. I wanted it ready and ready now…that’s the wonderment of the small batch series usually. Yes, age helps most blends but shouldn’t “need” it. Balkan Sobranie is still my favorite Balkan.
I will take my ounce and put it on the shelf and simply put, not buy anymore because what’s the use of cellaring 8oz if I will never get this blend again. Trust me, it’s not a bad Balkan. But it was pretty one note for me and that’s fairly disappointing, Read Less

This community is real funny to me and I just wanted to chime in and say that no one that shops here should have anything to complain about going forward regarding *limited* *small batch* releases. This time I guess it just wasn't what people wanted.
Brennan needs a nap, their cringe projecting makes me feel embarrassed for them-- but rest assured I'm already fully bent buddy. No one cares if you're crying either, so you made me laugh with your juvenile tantrum<3. What's interesting about these small batch reviews is that they're mostly one and done. No one comes to review them as much when they sell out because it doesn't matter since no one will be able to buy it.

Otherwise, quit giving bad reviews just because you’re butthurt you didn’t snag a tin or three. As for the 8 oz offering on this one, I wasn’t crazy about that as I prefer multiple 2 oz tins. That’s a problem easily remedied with a jar. That preference didn’t stop me simply because I wanted to try this blend. hting was the aroma. This stuff smells so good! I love the smell of Izmir Turkish of which this blend seems to have in abundance. Flavor is more nuanced. I've never considered C&D as the best when it comes to English/Latakia blends. I prefer the British/European brands personally, but this reminds me a lot of those. The latakia is refined and smooth. I have never had Syrian Latakia, but I definitely get the "wine like" comparison of flavor. Red wine that is. It leaves a subtle leathery flavor with a dry mouth feel. Nothing very "sweet" about this blend which lends credence to the use of "Balkan" in the name. Only the truest of experienced pipe smokers will enjoy this for the subtleties of flavor and aroma. Very good in my opinion. I can't wait to smoke this on a cool Fall day. The aroma alone will keep me coming back. Read Less

ia is just right and mellows out the smoke at times. Theres a mixture of notes from leather, caramel, spice and dark chocolate. Cellar this for 5 years and this will be of the top 10 blends, in tobacco history. Yes, it's that good. Do not buy this based off the reviews, as I read through most of them, it's clear many of the reviewers haven't smoked it yet. Mine arrived this morning, I'm on my third bowl. It's absolutely delightful. It's disgusting how the hipsters and wannabe's who are leaving poor reviews because they haven't got any or failed to check back when it was restocked. An absolute travesty. For you new to the hobby, these reviews are important to you for you to find the right blend, for us old timers that appreciate the time an effort that goes into creating these blends we should be leaving accurate and fair reviews. After all your word is your bond. But I digress, this is a smoke for an experienced smoker, English blends are different. Balkan is a stronger, bolder and more complex blend. The tin note is surprising, it's interesting, it's different, hard to describe as it'snot like typical balkan blends. There's more going on than I can put into words. The first couple puffs, you get a lot of different flavors, the retrohale, you tasted the orientals spice going to work and the dark chocolate. Very pleasant somewhat in the medium range of strength. Balkan blends are not for everyone. It's an acquired taste. As far as Balkans go, I'm a huge fan of this one though... I mean, this has to be one of my all time favorite Balkan blends. Read Less

ttle too sour and astringent, it improves through the bowl but that’s not saying much at the moment. Personally I’d have liked it a little sweeter, I think if Cypriot Latakia had been used it would have been an improvement, perhaps a little more Va too. These are just my first impressions though and I might just need to find the right pipe. That said I’m a bit pissed that I have eight ounces of a blend I’m not particularly keen on so far.
Update:
It’s a month later and I’ve found this blend is better in a cob, particularly my MM Legend. Much less astringent and sour but still not the best Balkan I’ve had by a long shot. I’ve also found that a little more Latakia, a splash of brandy and a week to meld does wonders for it. Upgraded to 3.5 stars. Read Less

DID. I ain't reviewing this lovely tobacco there, though.
When I first opened the 4 oz. can, I was transported...figuratively...to Cincinnati, OH and the place where I bought all my pipes and tobacco for many years...Strauss Tobaccos on Walnut just off Fountain Square.
This C&D blend has a container nose that is a doppelganger for Strauss' PRIVATE STOCK English Blend, which I smoked for many years, while getting my degrees at UC.
While the nose is similar, the TASTE is not quite the same. PRIVATE STOCK is Lat -forward, Palmetto's Perique is the leader here with the lush, aged Virginias backing and the Orientals dulcet in the background.
I bought all I could from the "other place"; like the other commentors, I don't remember seeing heads' up announcement. Pays to have a back-up source.

antly reminded me of some of my favorite blends, Frog Morton, Vintage Syrian, Northwoods, Shepherd's Pie...
However, unlike Frog or those other blends, this sweetness is not BBQ sauce, or Vanilla, it's a more generic sweetness.
This blend really shines when you're sipping it at low temperatures. At a higher temperature or on a relight it will get much harsher and spicier and the sweetness gets violently thrown in the back seat. While smoking it at low temps, the mouthfeel is silky, and the different notes dance with each other on each draw. On a retro, you'll get some intense spiciness from the orientals present.
This is the first small batch blend I've had that can scratch the itch that blends like FM, NW and SP can scratch, so I very much welcome this offering from C&D especially with the spicy twist they put on it. Read Less
