Tin note of smoky dark chocolate. Tobacco is a flake of a marbled brown, dark brown and black. Moisture content is great. Flakes break apart and rub out easily. Burns slow with a few extra relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild. Flavoring is mild, with notes of cocoa. Flavoring was mild throughout the smoke, mostly in the background. Taste is medium and very consistent, with notes of mild cocoa, smoky, toast, incense, spicy, buttery, fermented sour, spices, wood, earth, herbal floral hay, dry bitter musty vegetation, a sharp grassy, tangy citrus background note, and a peppery retro. Latakia is leading with Virginia and Flavoring supporting. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great....Read More
Great all day smoke!

I’m surprised at those who say it is stale. I have finished 5 tins since first getting it 2019 and have cellared many more. I think it’s a great transition blend when not in the mood for full English, aros-cased or uncased, vapers, plain ole virginias and burleys. It just fits a certain mood. Smoked very easy and I pick up the dark chocolate, light lat, and a little campfire smokiness. I reach for it often and the longer it cellars the better it gets. I always fold and stuff. Tried it rubbed and cubed but I think it’s best the way it is straight out of the can....Read More

A Good Book, A Good Pipe and A Great Tobacco

Normally, I am a strict devotee of English Blends, especially those heavy with Latakia. I NEVER smoke aromatics/flavored tobaccos and Virginia blends failed to satisfy my tastes.... Until now! Hearyhside is a well balanced, easy on the tongue with just enough perigue to kick the taste up a notch. It is a great all day smoke. Believe me; if this blend can entice me to set aside my Latakia, it has to be great!!...Read More
Stale, Bitter, Sour... NOT Sweet in the Least.

The cocoa is detectable and is one of unsweetened chocolate. I didn't get the vanilla, but I did pick up a little alcohol of sorts. The VA lacks sugar and is sour and stale. The latakia is minor and contributes to a stale flavor profile of the mixture. I think had Jeremy used sweetened Black Cav, this would've been better. I added my own and it improved some. This needs to be sweeter. Not sure I'll finish the tin. This isn't a good mixture....Read More

As a pipe smoker of just over 3 years now, I've learned I primarily like two families of blends, English, and Virginia. One of my favorite blends of all time was Samuel Gawith Navy Flake. Now I'm not saying that this blend is a substitute for that treasure but I found that this came very close to some of the qualities of it. But what I loved about this blend above all else is the flavorings that were on it. Like most of us I started on cheap aromatic blends and learned very quickly that I hate them after trying a real quality blend, but I say, this blend did it right and perfectly for season that it was released for. My wife and her family dont particularly like the room note of some blends, but this one around Christmas time always has them inviting me inside to enjoy it. Man, oh man, do I wish I could always have this blend....Read More
Bland, Stale Latakia Flavor
January 02, 2020
Product: Cornell & Diehl Hearthside 2oz
I tried to like this blend. After a couple of smokes, all I really got was a stale latakia flavor with some bitter chocolate aroma. I'll never have a reason to smoke more of this, with so many other good latakia blends in my cellar. I tossed the tin :(

This tobacco is a nice smoke all the way through, though slight harshness if not careful but that is occasionally welcomed by me. In my opinion this is a good tobacco and I will continue to keep this in my rotation.
Va/Lat w/ Strong Topping

Strong smells of chocolate, nutmeg, and vanilla once you pop open the tin. The smoke is not nearly as strong as the topping. Standard grassy Virginias with a slightly sweet and woodsy Latakia. Would not write home about it but will write a review as it seems these Wintertime Reserve blends are somewhat of a shot in the dark for most buyers....Read More
Interesting Aromatic for the Latakia-Curious
January 03, 2020
Product: Cornell & Diehl Hearthside 2oz
This blend is pretty nice, for what it is: a mellow, sweet, strongly-aromatic Virginia flake with a dab of Latakia added. In the tin, this blend comes as a soft flake of yellow and medium Virginias. Very easy to rub out to a soft cloud. Tin note is sweet and smooth, dominated by the aromatic mix of chocolate, sweet vanilla and a hint of a very light floral Lakeland-like note(?). The aroma of the Virginias is present, the Latakia is understated. In the bowl, the added aroma also dominates the flavor, sending off clouds of sweet smelling incense, with a modest taste of Latakia, which serves to make the mouthfeel a bit more full and smooth, considering the sugar/acid combo typical of light Virginias. Ghosts heavily....Read More
