Starting with a base of 50% Latakia, with a generous portion of Turkish leaf, then sweetened with stoved red Virginia, Star of the East is a full bodied blend, as well as a long time favorite of Cornell and Diehl customers.
I wasn't sure wuite what to expect with a blend claiming 50% Latakia. I mean, I like Latakia, but would I like it THAT much?

Packed, lit and burned perfectly. First light is all Latakia, with the Turkish coming into play part way through the bowl. Aftertaste is surprisingly clean and short-lived, and the room note is lighter and cleaner than one might expect as well. My wife is not hot on the smell of Latakia blends, but my daughter loved this one in my beard afterwards. Read Less
It will forever be in my cold weather rotation. I have several pipes reserved for this blend. The only drawback is that to me It has a strong aftertaste. I need to brush or chew gum after smoking this one!!

Each blender's taste is unique, and C&D has a rustic quality that showcases clean-tasting tobacco with little, if any, toppings and PG. Nicotine, body and flavor are all equally 2 out 5 in strength. For having 50% latakia, this blend was surprisingly pleasant to me (I like measured doses of latakia). It's rich and flavorful, and the smoke has an incense-like quality. I highly recommend this blend.
Such a rich deep smoking experience! Heavy with smoky Latakia and fragrant orientals, it burned wonderfully and hit all the right notes for me. Absolutely a staple in my smoking regimen when I want a break from my beloved burley.
The blender lies a blatant lie with this one. The tin claims a half Latakia blend, which is for any Latakia fan like me is a dream. And sadly it isn't, so if that's your buying point, then stay away from this. However, this is not bad tobacco at all.... Read More On the contrary, I found it pleasurable from start to finish. When you first open the tin, you're welcomed by a lovely smell of Latakia and orientals. As if you walked into a place that sells incense. The cut is a thick ribbon and at the perfect moisture, at least in my case. It is quite easy to light and keep lit. I rarely had to relight this. It smokes consistently, dryly and burns down till the bottom. With your first few buffs you may find that it is not at all a heavy Latakia blend despite what C&D says. It has rich, dark virginia, complemented with spicy and woodsy orientals with an okay precense of Latakia. Definitely a complementary condiment rather than the star of the show as they claim. Nevertheless it's a pleasant blend that is enjoyable for any English lover. I found it to pair well with black coffee as well, and as for me its nicotine is mild to medium, but again this last part is subjective. I presume the flake will be better than this, and hopefully closer to their Latakia claim

I cannot say enough good things about this blend. 50% Latakia sounds imposing, but in the pipe it is a delight. I think the title of my review explains everything. It's a goldmine and definitely going to

How about, Star of the West since the wise men came from the East, the star was in the west. All that said, this is a good burley based oriental. It’s not a great blend, but nether is it a bad or bland blend. I wouldn’t purchase again.
I'm a Latakiaphile so anything that claims that much latakia definitely caught my attention. Smooth, tasty, and very enjoyable, I'd recommend for anyone that enjoys the smokiness of latakia. It went great as I was smoking a brisket
This is a very nicely balanced option to stock up on. For me, this is how I expand the lifespan of my top-shelf tins. I try to keep plenty of this on hand. Star of the East does co rain a lot of Latakia but I think the orientals really shine in this blend. This is not your typical English blend. I pick up lots of different flavors that make for a great smoke.
The tin aroma is sweet and smoky with a light tang to it. The flavor profile gives you smoky, woody, spicy, and slightly sweet notes with a light nutty and very light black coffee bitterness on the finish. A pretty good blend.

I used to subscribe to an old canard that the latakia should be no more than about 10% of the blend. Not sure where that came from, but this certainly puts the kibosh on that.
