Picadilly is a provocative Pease blend of several Virginia tobaccos, delicately spiced with Latakia, and finished with Louisiana Perique. The alluring flavor is revealed in layers throughout the smoke. It's lighter and sweeter than the others, but still rich, with hints of cinnamon and citrus. A perfect "English Breakfast Mixture."
One of my favorite G.L. Pease blends, and it was the first of many English blends I tried when I began smoking a pipe. After smoking it every morning for an entire summer, I still go back to it constantly; therefore I've revised this review. Piccadil... Read Morely is a well-balanced blend, with all the component tobaccos noticeable in the right proportions, albeit in a rather low-key fashion. Upon opening the tin, the Latakia note is strong, but it's content is rather low; just enough to let the Perique shine through. The Virginia flavors are savory and on the grassy side, lending it body. The three components create a flavor all their own instead of being outwardly noticeable on their own. The casing, as with most G.L. Pease blends, is light. There are very mild notes of a honey & citrus topping, as mentioned by others. Absolutely nothing is overpowering here, yet it's got a lot of flavor—leave it to Greg to create such blends! The balance of flavors is just right, nothing is harsh, and the nicotine level is appropriately low. This is very similar to Greg's newer blend called Trafalgar with Drucquer & Sons; carrying a similar flavor profile and namesake. For fans of old world style Englishes, this is certainly worth trying. Read Less
Smoking this a little hot produces a peppery spice, similar to a cigar. However, when you keep it cool, the sweeter notes really come through. To me, I pickup a nutmeg, light cinnamon and cloves taste And aroma. I do think it is a little stronger ... Read Moreand flavorful than listed. I love this stuff. Read Less
Piccadilly is a staple in my puffing rotation. It defies classification in the same that C&D's Plantation Evening resists simple labeling. The tin aroma welcomes with the immediate tingling piquant of the Perique with only a hint of Latakia in the s... Read Moreniff. The blend of the Virginias and Perique really make this blend interesting, and the light touch of Latakia adds a bit of smokey sweetness that plays well with the Virgnias. Hard to say how much of the citrusy tang comes from Virginias or the Perique, but the blending of the two creates a nice foundation for the trace amount of Latakia. For me, this is what Dunhill EMP and C&D would want to be when they grow up. This could be an all day smoke, but I think it is best enjoyed as the occasional pipe a day when you have time to enjoy its complexity and depth of flavors. I do tend to smoke this in the morning (as suggested by the description), but only after having finished going through all of my emails and preparing work for the day. For that I smoke through a bowl or two of EMP. I then have time to enjoy this blend with a last cuppa before the work day begins. Highly recommended. Read Less
15 month old tin: VERY sweet. In appearance, there's plenty of lemons mixed with mahogany and reds. Those lemons contribute a sharp, citrusy sweetness at first, but the reds and mahogany interplay and provide a wonderful Virginia symphony of sweet ... Read Morebread, wood and citrus. That sweetness is supported by a constant but unpretentious smokiness from the lightly applied latakia. The perique adds a small amount of plummy spice here and there, but like the latakia, it's never forward or a predominate element in the profile. This reminds me of Early Morning Pipe. Whereas EMP is less sweet and supported with toasted Orientals and their nuttiness - Piccadilly has a more contemplative VA nuance. The flavor profile of EMP tends to congeal into a monotony of stoved smokiness further into the bowl, however Piccadilly retains individual characteristics of various leaves... this is what EMP wants to be when it grows up. There's something else in Piccadilly I can't quite place... a honeysuckle/cinnamon note. Almost as if there's a tea element to this. At first I thought it was my imagination running, but there's definitely a topping to this that adds a subtle sweet spiced/floral nuance. This is great with a black cup of coffee. While it's a mild mixture, it does provide a bit of nicotine: 2.0 out of 5 Read Less
This one smokes as spicy as an English, without the woodiness, to me it was more like cinnamon, than citrus and cinnamon, the citrus was more subtle, the spiciness was great, not bad at all! No bite, either! A great one for breakfast or lunch!
