Product: G. L. Pease Sextant 2oz
I have not tried all of the popular English Blends, but Sextant has been my favorite one so far.
I like that G.L. Pease has a tendency to push outside some of the traditional blend component, Sextant being an example. As a navy blend fan, I enjoy... Read More
the addition of rum to this blend. I think it really works when usually I would think whiskey works best with the Latakia flavor profile. The addition of Kentucky gives me that nutmeg hint I describe in my review of G.L. Pease Navigator.
There are some notes of cooking spices and herbs (maybe coriander or cardamom) in this blend as well which, for me, make it an interesting and savory journey when smoking this. The sweetness you get from this is less obvious and not of a sugary nature, but works well with the rum to give me something indescribable. This is a beautiful mixture that I thoroughly enjoy, and just like Navigator, I find myself reaching for when I don't want any doubts about being satisfied for an after dinner period of contemplation and gustatory enjoyment. I would buy this again without a doubt.
I have smoked this in a variety of slightly-wider bowls, all pots. I did not care too much for this blend at first, but it only got better with time, and also time and patience to find the right pipe for it. My tin is from 03/2017. I use an Aldo Velani pot with slight bend. I pack about half the bowl, because of the strength of this blend. I recommend a drink on-hand.
Nothing more I can think of to say about this one. You have to try it to see for yourself. Read Less

I received this blend as a Christmas gift and cracked the tin straightaway. Manufactured in March so it had a few months to age at least. The tin note is divine, with sweet Latakia and rum aromas filling my olfactory senses. I packed my MM Elf, whi... Read More
ch is fairly deep and narrow. Moisture content is on the moist side of perfect and it takes the flame easily. The dominant flavor is Latakia and Virginia, with the rum a constant and delicious background flavor. The dark fired is detectable but more of an added spice than a key player here, and it works wonderfully in that role, slowly increasing as the bowl develops as one would expect. By midpipe Sextant is a rich medley of flavors, and everything melds together into one beautiful English flavor. It tastes eerily similar to my own personal English blend that just came off of 5 weeks in the press. Sextant is a full flavored English with a little extra (rum and df)... and it delivers. Medium in body, medium in nicotine, and rich in flavor, Sextant maintains this profile throughout. By no means a lat bomb, but neither is it an unassuming mild english, Sextant can be smoked multiple times per day but may be a little heavy for strictly all day. As I continue smoking Sextant it has taken on a quasi all day position in my rotation. I always have a pipe of Sextant nearby and I take a few puffs here and there as I desire. It maintains it's flavor well even after several relights for the most part Well done Mr pease I aspire to your blending prowess. Read Less
Not a fan

This is the first GLP blend I’ve really struggled with. It does have a lovely complex aroma and is satisfying as a smoke, however rather than being an “enchanting interweaving of traditions,” it seems like it can’t decide what it wants to be. It is n... Read More
either navy flake nor English; neither Virginia blend nor oriental. I am certainly glad I tried it, but I may nave expected too much. Leathery and rich, I don’t think it’s an improvement upon Navigator. As in other GLP creations, the nicotine punch is STRONG from the Burley. I’d recommend a small bowl and slow smoke if you’re sensitive to that. All that said, my two stars may very well be your five.
Over time, some 8 months later, this has not grown on me. What I had left went in the trash. Read Less
I'd hate to be without this.

A superb tobacco. Easy to pack and light, produces nice volumes of enjoyable smoke. A hint of sweet rum with proper tobacco tastes in the background. A delightful and satisfying smoke any time of day, but particularly in the evening.
Yo ho, Yo ho! 'Tis a nice smooth smoke!

A symphony of flavor, starting off as smooth, building to strong climax, and ending with flavor and spiciness as it's wonderful crescendo, leaving you wanting more.

This is a great navy blend with just enough punch to satisfy a salty dog. Very pleasurable to puff on and no girly-man flavorings. This has entered my rotation. The Virginias really shine. A great companion to an aged single-malt or barrel-aged J... Read More

Revisited Sextant this A.M. with the morning coffee.
Stephen E nailed it above. The first half bowl was a perfect chorus of voices, a harmonious 'mp' (mezzo piano--- "moderately soft" volume) in the predawn. In the second half, the orientals swelle... Read More

Leather and old Sailing

Product: G. L. Pease Sextant 2oz
Tin note is leather and old sailing ship, which to me, is substantive, and transportive that just adds to my enjoyment. I prefer it over Navigator that is (to me) fruit cased that adds little value. Sextant is straight to the point, well sourced, bal... Read More

A booze topped Balkan

I love the name, package and total marketing of this Booze toped Balkan. The first bowl I had was good but left me craving more and the more I smoke the better. One of my favorites in the winter.

Here we have an earthy, spicy, dark sweet tobacco which is satisfying in every way. It's going to be a favourite.

An interesting and enjoyable blend. At first the Latakia takes front and center. As you progress through the bowl the Virginia really begins to shine, with an ever so slight rum(?) flavour.

Leaves a nice room note, an enjoyable aftertaste. Has a fair nicotine punch, especially at the end.

Product: G. L. Pease Sextant 2oz
Already one of my top blends. If you like English latakia blends, navy flake and dark fired, why not have all at once? It's not mild and not heavy. Just right to provide a delicious, sophisticated, balanced and relaxing smoke. Right on GL Pease!
