5 yr Sixpence: all the above but so smooth. Fresh artisanal croissant comes in. It's perfectly balanced. It has more levels of subtly and loses some complexity for a much more unified profile. The Virginias are incredible. The perique smooths out and loses any harshness. Every year of age makes it into a tobacco of a whole other class.
Overall it's awesome from its packaging and turns celestial with age! I'm cellaring as many tins of it as I can. I can't wait for the coming years with this blend. Read Less

Very rich and satisfying. Red Virginias and a generous amount of Perique. Description says dark fired Kentucky and I won't disagree, but the major players are the Va and Per. Broken flake, moisture was good from tin so it went directly into a jar.... Read More

So, I am a fan of bolder blends, but generally can find the appeal of the subtler stuff. I am also a HUGE fan of Mr. Pease's work. That said, this stuff baffles me. It's very bland. I've tried aging it for a year, various levels of moisture, differen... Read More
t sized chambers, etc., but it still tastes like a whole bunch of nothing. A hint of a very subtle Virginia, but that's it. What am I not getting that the other reviewers are? I'll let my two remaining tins sit a few years and come back to this stuff later.
UPDATE - seeing the comment above, I'll qualify my opinion for now. Maybe there was a QC issue somewhere along the line. As my fellow reviewer said, G.L. Pease just doesn't do bland and all these reviews lead me to believe it's something on my end. I'all try ordering another tin, as I don't want to return tins that have been aging for a year now. Not sure what happened given the rave reviews and the fact that it’s a Pease blend. I didn’t get much rum/booze odor from my tin, and frankly all I tasted was the somewhat ‘bready’ virginias. I’m inclined to think I may have gotten a bad batch. May o... Read More

very evenly throughout.
Pretty pleasant taste with rich smoke feel to start.
Pretty pleasant Room Note from start to finish.
A bit spicy, but tolerable.
At first I thought it wasn't really my thing, but it starts to grow on you about half way through; finishes very well.
Has more flavor than Rattray's Black Virginia.
Hits the tongue mostly center to the back; slightly on the center toward the front.
No tongue bite.
Has a very pleasant aftertaste; kind of like coffee. Goes very well with coffee.
The lingering room note is very pleasant. Has a hint of something sweet. Maybe a little like floral of a sweet Cherry Blossom with a hint of spice.
The smoke reminds me of the Tin Note of Dreams of Kadath.
Has a very pleasant Beard Note.
I found myself craving another smoke shortly after I had finished my first bowl.
I like it a lot!

When you crack the tin, the first thing you get is a cognac/grape wine note. It does carry over into the flavor when smoked but really adds to the profile! Not your standard KyVaPer and in this case that is a good thing!

flavor of the smoke. The tobacco itself is a well presented broken flake, and comes just a touch moist. However... I just give this tobacco a gentle rub and pack it straightaway and gently with no drying time, and In my opinion this is the way to go. This will cause a moderately wet smoke but for me, its really not a hassle and I want every last molecule of flavor to make it to my tongue and nose (not too wet or a smoke). Just like the tin note the flavors that wash over the senses are a woody smokiness and light to medium virginia hay flavors, and just enough fruity and spicy perique to really round out the experience. Theres also a creamy flavor that reminds me faintly of The Virginia Cream, which must be the virginias, and also a spicyness. Sixpence is a masterpiece. If Bach were a modern tobacco blender he would bow to Mr. Pease for engineering this symphony of flavors, balanced just right. It is the gold standard of dark fired and perique blends, and out of all that ive tried is my new favorite. Below I saw this compared to Gaslight, and in a sense i can understand it because both are uniquely mysterious and delicious, but i feel this could easily be an all day smoke where gaslight is strong enough to stay an occasional delight, or perhaps once a day. If you love the flavor of good american dark fired and virginia then do yourself a favor and try this blend. This is a 5 star blend. The only reason i docked a star is that i had some issue with my 8 oz. tins being too dry to recover and smoke, but smokingpipes service was above and beyond and they helped me resolve my issues and assured me that the issue is known and being corrected. Customer service has been very helpful. A++. Consistency is important, and though my issue was an anomaly i have to consider it. When i receive my new 8 oz. Tin in my next order and try it out i will put Sixpence in its rightful place with 5 stars. I look forward to it. Read Less

tial guilt for doing so in this case. Sixpence is of clear quality. The tobacco is lovely--Greg Pease does not put out offal. This one is just not for me. Where others taste a hint of anise or absinthe, I sense heat, like I'm puffing too urgently regardless of how delicately I nibble. It's cloying, but there are no flavor profiles that justify that kind of adjective. I don't know. Like I said, I wanted to like it. I'd say give it a whirl. I'm obviously in the minority on this one. I feel like I'm missing out, like everyone else is having a different experience. But let's return to a positive place by way of an utter non sequitur: Bosch's Tondal's Vision is a masterpiece of surrealism centuries before that trail was supposedly blazed in two-dimensional art.
