You might want to know this has some liquorice flavoring in the background. After all, it's an old school American smoking mixture. Absolutely mild and cool smoking in every regard. Sounds like your cup of tea? Here's your all day blend.
Without a bite or a regret.

Ordered the 2.5 ounce tin first, and let me say this, soon as I opened and took a whiff of it, I was sure I was going to enjoy this! And, it was quite the experience for me. I love historic blends, and this one is for sure a favorite of mine now. I a... Read More

Wow. I bought this out of curiosity due to the packaging and the write up about it being an old-school type blend of years gone by; unadulterated without fake flavouring - just pure tobacco.
It is a "classically complex English blend of Virgini... Read More
a, Latakia, Turkish and cubed Burley..." I wouldn't call myself an expert with regards to pipe smoking and tobacco, but I'm pretty good. I find that, for me, this tobacco has a very pronounced and sharp spiciness to it - either they snuck in some Perique and never told anyone (which I doubt) or the Virginias they chose are so zesty that the underlying spiciness I pick up is consistent throughout the whole bowl of tobacco from top to bottom.
Now, having said this, it's not all bad. The spiciness is there but then swimming around that spice thread are notes and essences of earthy Burley - the kind of leaf that really has the 'back in the day' kind of taste and smell. It's intoxicating and curiously addictive. I find that I'm chasing that scent and taste throughout the bowl and it's not unlike playing hide-and-seek.
Add to this interplay of spice and earth the lofty movement of the Latakia and Turkish leaf. Mmmmm. These leaves encompass the interplay of spice and earth very well. They all dance together around the whole insides of your mouth begging you on to guess which flavour it going to pop up where exactly....!
If you ever get the chance to smoke this; try it in several different pipes and bowl sizes. Smoke slow and contemplatively. Try to pick out each exact leaf with each puff and you will be suitably rewarded with an exquisite period of bonding time with this complex and straight forward blend by E. Hoffman and Co. Read Less

Tin note of smoky, sharp sweet fruit and spices. Tobacco is a ribbon cut of tan, light brown, dark brown and black. Moisture content is good. Some pipe smokers will want to dry it a bit. Burns slow with few relights. The strength is mild to medium an... Read More
d nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is mild to medium and moderately consistent, with notes of smoky, herbal floral, molasses, spices, sweet toast, sugar, mildly savory, dry, spicy, fermented sour vegetation, wood, mild dark fruit, lemon grass, zesty orange peel, a incense and sweet nutty background note, and a peppery retro. Latakia is leading with Burley, Oriental/Turkish and Virginia supporting. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great. Read Less

Instant favorite from the first bowl. Very smooth, and you might suspect there is some cavendish in the mix but there isn't. The anise/vanilla note is very pleasant but slightly in the background. The aroma aligns nicely with other Iwan Ries blends.... Read More

Upon opening the tin, I was greeted by the strong smell of Rum? The tobacco was too wet to smoke so I let it dry for several hours and it was still to wet to smoke. A couple of days later, I tried again and it was still to wet to smoke so I let it ai... Read More
r dry some more then put the lid back on and waited a week. The Rum smell was still there but it had dried to the point that it could be smoked. Still moist enough to steam my tongue though. More drying in a closed tin and finally this morning I was able to keep it lit and actually smoke a bit of it. Definitely has a bit of Latakia and also produces a good cloud of smoke. Can’t really detect different components but it’s not all Latakia and makes for a tasty but nondescript flavor with mostly Latakia aroma. Mild but full flavor. I’m hoping it’ll settle down soon so I can give it a better taste test. It’s got a bit of spicieness and decent strength. I’m still waiting for an optimum moisture level to really make relevant comments. To be fair, I’m trying it in a long stemmed Meerschaum that has no ghosting...honest flavors will prevail. Overall impression was not great but there appears to be potential after getting the moisture under control...I may update after bit. Read Less

Popped open a new tin at the pipe club. It was totally dried out. Even the guy who likes to open his tins a week prior to smoking said “too dry”. A few of us tried it anyway. It was totally tasteless. Topped? Not that any of us could tell. Lat... Read More
akia? If so, it’s so faint it makes HGL taste like a lat. bomb. Will try rehydration and update review if anything improves. UPDATE I rehydrated the tin, and if anything, it’s even worse. So harsh I couldn’t even finish the bowl. That tends to happen to me with low grade VA, so I dug around in the tin. No cubes here, and no orientals that I could make out. I think this blend is basically the manufacturers “scrap jar”. On the bright side, SP sent me a replacement tin after reading my review. No one was willing to try this again this meeting, so I’ll pass the new tin around in a couple of months. Thanks SP! Excellent customer service! Read Less

Pleasant All Day Mild English

I got to chance to try E. Hoffman Company's Spilman Mixture at our last meeting thanks to the generosity of our members. It was described as a mild English blend. Mild English blends are my favorites so I had to dive right in and try a bowl. The tin ... Read More
is described as "complex English blend of Virginia, Latakia, Turkish and cubed Burley" by the manufacturer. I don't smoke a lot of blends with burley in it. I think I may be missing out and may need to expand my horizons. Mild English is a very appropriate description of this tobacco. More accurate would be a pleasantly mild English tobacco. The Latakia, Virginia, and Burley tobaccos are very well balanced to create a tasty smoke that reminded of toasted nuts and summer campfires. The Turkish is the one component that was almost lost in the background. This might be a good thing, as too much Turkish would upset the balance already achieved in this tobacco. This may not be a smoke that completely knocks your socks off but it makes for a great all day, anytime smoke. I can't wait to try it first thing in the morning with a nice cup of coffee. Overall 4 our 5 stars. I will be ordering a pound or two to add to my cellar. Read Less
