Not my cup of tea

If you're going to review something, refrain from saying "well if you're a real pipe smoker, you'll like this". No, this hobby is all about enjoyment. If you want to buy a ton of pipes, and grumble over the nuances of this blend vs that blend, well..... Read More
.you're a pipe smoker. It's your hobby. If you want to smoke one blend in one pipe for your entire life because its the one you like? Go for it. You're a pipe smoker. Enjoy your hobby. Don't dig at someone else because they don't like what you like.
All that being said, my review. Smells very strongly of an off-putting sweetness with an aromatic quality I can't place...maybe some kind of liqueur? Bitey off first light. I gave it an extra star because it packed well and burned well. Had a few relights, but nice white flaky ash after I was done. Anyway, I like an aromatic that I can identify and wrap my head around. This I could not and probably never will. If you like a straightforward flavor in your tobacco, stay far away from this. It's just confusing. Read Less

This is good stuff. I am going to put this in my daily all day smoke category. If you are looking for an all day blend give this one a try. It packs well, lights easy, no bite, good taste and room note.

I'm not sure what I can add that hasn't already been said about Iwan Ries' Three Star Blue so much of this will cover well trodden ground. Three Star Blue is a wonderful and original tasting tobacco. It's somewhat English, somewhat aromatic (in a goo... Read More
d way) but very unique in flavor and aroma. For me it's one of those that there is no substitute for. If I'm in the mood for this, nothing else will come close to that taste. It's a medium strength blend to me, others say it's a lighter all-day sort. I think it can be deceptively robust at times. Aside from the flavoring they add, the other thing I like best is that it's so well blended that none of it's parts stand out. Each of the tobacco types present work in unison to promote the overall taste and experience. There's a reason it's been around so long. Speaking of age, if you don't know who Iwan Ries is you need to find out before sundown or pack up your pipes (I could be wrong but, I've always pronounced it “E Vaughn Reese”). And, of course Three Star Blue is practically synonymous with Iwan Ries. They have other blends of Three Star tobaccos, but Blue is the one that gets all the recognition. My pouches always seem a bit on the dry side but I can't complain. I think they light and burn more evenly than you'd expect. It leaves a nice dry bowl having disappeared leaving barely any ash behind. It is also one of those blends that smokes great in any pipe regardless of shape, size, or material. If you haven't tried it, you should. If you find you don't like it (as if?), I'm sure you'll have no problem finding someone who'll take it off your hands. Enjoy. Read Less
What is a 5-star anyways?

iff burns the dickens out of my tongue. But this little number here burns slow, even, and with no tongue-bite. In fact, I enjoy the blend so much that I almost want to smoke it exclusively. I find it a bit "loud" but I like that. It has a big aroma, almost like a musk, for me anyways. Not all of us pick up on the same notes. I believe I was told that there was no anise but that is what i seem to pick up. May not be anise, but some kind of liqeur. Who knows.
I enjoy smoking it out of a meer that I purchased at the shop in Chicago.
I hope SP can stock some of their other blends as well. Three star bronze is a masterpiece. Read Less

This is a weekly smoke for me, no matter what else is in the rotation. It's what little Burley seedlings dream of being on Career Day in Kentucky Kindergarten. Incredibly smooth, toasty yet rich, it's a classic that's never dated.

I generally hate aromatics but lately I've been coming around. This is very subtle but I like the flavor no matter that I cannot identify the taste. Has been tasty in 4 different pipes so I'll likely keep a pouch around.

of salt, but this has quickly become one of my favorite blends. The tin aroma immediately places me in the Ries showroom. Smoked, the topping is elusive and intriguing without dominating the tobacco, which gives me a balance of toast and spice that just works for my palate. I experience no problems with bite whatsoever and this is the rare aromatic that, in my hands (and I still tend to work my pipes like cigars) burns dry to the bottom of the bowl. I'll be stocking up on this. Read Less

One of the hottest burning tobacco blends I’ve ever loaded in a pipe. If you slow down it goes out, speed up a pinch and you’ll be drinking butter milk to heal the burn. It has a somewhat nice aroma, or is that the briar wood of my pipe burning.

Just a very nice everyday smoke. The bag smells of anise and there is some vanilla in the smoke as well. This is what I would expect pipe smoking was all about back in the 1970's.

ed amazing. Lots of rustic cuts, bits and broken flakes that all look and feel of the highest quality, and no stickiness like you might expect from an aromatic... which might be because this isn't so much an aromatic as it is an English cross-over blend. The room note was mild, but not arromatic at all. My wife remarked that it was "fragrant" but not really arromatic. It will still put off those who don't like smoke. The taste was also non-arromatic. I could not detect any flavorings when smoking; I just got the tobacco. And the tobacco is okay. Rather complex but mild, though I was getting some unpleasant bitterness. It also bit a little, and was hard to keep lit and get a satisfying amount of smoke out of. I don't know. As a cross-over style English I think it works, though I'd say there are better blends out there. As an arromatic it does not work at all. The jury is still out on this one as far as I'm concerned.
