The Beloved HGL.

This is one of the Lane treasures. Mr. Lane's favorite. A very lightly sweet recipe with a a touch of the Latakia for spice. The balance between light sweet and light smokey make this a must have. The aroma is enchanting.

I took this advice to heart and sampled Lane HGL, my expectations were low but I was proved wrong in my prejudices of HGL basically being Captain Black with latakia added.
HGL is a sublime blend and I find it an excellent old school type of smoke. It packs easily and takes to a light quite well, it begins with a light sweetness that maintains throughout most of the smoke and also satisfies my need for a bit smokiness in a blend. Leaves a good room note and after taste as well as a nice mustache aroma for the wife.
Can easily be smoked throughout the day.
I only give it 4 stars because it is relatively weak in nicotine.
A must try blend from the golden days of yore. Read Less

already but I could also pick up hints of sweetness that didn't force me to put it down. I loaded up my pipe and fired it up. It packed great, and lit well. I was surprised at how smooth and cool the smoke was. The presence of latakia wasn't overwhelming for me and there was enough sweetness to keep me interested. I found myself really puffing away at this and before I knew it I finished my bowl. I've had about 3 or so bowls and it's been consistent each smoke. Read Less

ame as RLP-6 and CBR (Royal) was Lane's 1-Q. Believe what you want to believe, I'm not trying to convince anyone of this, but HGL is a bit different. While other tobaccos may be the same or (at a minimum) similar, HGL takes it a step further by adding something the Captain Black line lacks; namely an all-day English Cavendish blend. It's not a secret that HGL was Herman G. Lane's personal blend, thus “HGL”. And, that blend was basically RLP-6 with a wee bit of Latakia added. Brilliant idea, Mr. Lane. So that makes HGL basically a Captain Black Original with Latakia. That works for me. This is a mild, flavorful blend that has a nice soft quality to it. It is somewhat sweet and light for an English blend thanks to the Cavendish, but it's a very pleasant smoke that works great as an all-day blend or a beginner's blend for those wanting to try something more in the direction of non-aromatics. It is on the light side of English, so don't expect a Lat-bomb. If you've ever had John Bull Royal English, it's in the same ballpark. For those of you that tune in to the YTPC (YouTube pipe community), Padre Piper often gives this one his blessing, which is how I found out about it. Thanks Padre! I may not ride a Vespa anytime soon, but I'll try any blend he recommends; we apparently have similar tastes in tobacco. Enjoy. Read Less

ttle sweet from the Cavendish, a little nutty from the burley, A little tangy from the Virginia's and a little smoky from the Latakia. I find that some blends with Latakia tend to have too much and it overpowers the rest of the tobacco's, but not so with this blend, as the Latakia seems to be perfectly applied. Read Less

of Latakia, I found the amount added to HGL was just right for me. It loaded and lit very readily and did not smoke hot or bite. It burned slowly to the bowl's end and did not leave any goop behind, nor did it gurgle. Picked up the Captain Black influence that many have commented on; not too much, but present.
A pleasant set-it-and-forget-it type of smoke and a good crossover blend for those wanting to venture into Latakia territory; but not too deeply. Not my type of tobacco to place in weekly rotation, but certainly good for what it intends to be. A nice smoke for a cool fall day, sitting on the porch, watching the leaves fall. Nothing spectacular, but dependable. Reminds me of those old codger burleys with Latakia mixed in. Happy I tried it. A solid recommended for those who want a smidgen of Latakia in their smoke. I have ever smoked, has a great room note, and it taste wonderful on the palate. I can and will smoke this every day, and I have no reason to look for anything else at this point in my pipe smoking world. Give this one a try, my friends, and I hope that you have the same experience that I have had.

The latakia was applied with a light hand here, and just as DeWars blends the more smoky scotch at minimal levels to add just the slightest peaty smoke nuance, this is similar. In the Lat world, we have the Latakia heads who want more and more, and then those that appreciate the light hand to arrive at a more complex and refined nuance. Reminiscent of toasted marshmallows over a campfire; caramelized smoky sweetness. Has very little nicotine and virtually no bite. my pipe and lit the tobacco and the first puff was sweet and smoky, a perfect little crossover blend for those who want to enjoy bites of Latakia but don't want to offend guests or those around you. I literally can smoke this all day, and the flavors of vanilla ride on the back of the mild yet very pleasant notes of Latakia. Smooth as silk. Towards the half and end of the bowl the taste develops into a bit of latakia smokiness, but very little, and quite a bit of perique. The room note is not as pleasant as I would have expected.
