Among the most elusive of Mac Baren's spun-cut mixtures is Royal Twist, a distinctive Virginia/Perique blend enhanced by Dark-Fired Kentucky. Despite strong popularity and demand, it was delisted in the 1960s due to shared name registrations and unfortunately was taken off the market. While it later returned as Mac Baren's flagship Roll Cake, one of the blending house's most popular tobaccos of all time, the recipe had changed and no longer included Perique.

Crafted using its original 1960s recipe and packaged in 100g tins with vintage artwork, Mac Baren's Royal Twist returns in a limited-edition run, available only at Smokingpipes. Select Virginias, Dark-Fired Kentucky, and Perique form the core of this complex mixture, elevated by a naturally sweet, whole-leaf Virginia wrapper for a nuanced, all-day smoking experience with just the right amount of peppery, smoky spice. The Virginia We Need

A delicious blend with wonderful flavor development. The casing is simple and subtle, like a wisp of sweet cream. This flavor marries with pastry-like Virginia on the draw, making for a smooth, elegant entry. From there, an excellent body unfolds, with toasty Virginias and flavors of nuttiness and grain. The DFK is clearly boosting the flavor here but is not forward - a mark of a well-considered blend. Perique steps up in the finish to put an exclamation point on the smoke, with a perfect level of peppery snap on the retrohale. The burn is good but, not surprisingly, requires some care to keep temps within bounds. In short, this is not your ordinary VaPer; it is a deft blend that showcases the Mac Baren sense of proportion. I would love to see this one move into regular production. PS: I've tried a few Mac Baren blends, including Mixture Scottish, Mixture Modern Danish, Original Choice, HH Old Dark Fired, and the MB-produced Newminster Danish Gold. Freshly opened tin dated Mar 2021, has notes of mild pungent barbeque, spices, and sugar. Tobacco is an orangish brown and dark brown coins with tan specks. moisture content is a on the dry side, coins rub out with a little effort. Burns slow with a few relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild to medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and consistent, with notes of wood, bread, leather, orange peel, dry earth, floral, slightly bitter, grass/vegetation/hay, sugar, moderately spicy, a tangy dark spice fruit background note, and a peppery retro. Spicy and sweet

The Virginias steal the show with a nice sweet blend, but the dark fired Kentucky Burley adds spice so that the Perique can take on its almost berry-like fruit flavor with a tangy, zesty aftertaste. Together these flavors make a nice smoke that is both gentle and fulfilling and has a slightly fruity aftertaste without being over-civilized like your average aromatic. I hope they make this a regular feature of the Mac Baren lineup, because it has the staying power that Roll Cake and Dark Twist do not, and seems more flavorful than Three Nuns Green. The closest match is the Savinelli Doblone d'Oro which is really tasty but not quite as intense as this blend. I also noted an absence of the usual sugar fire blast on the first light, which suggests that Mac Baren might be subtly changing their topping and binding agent, traditionally maple sugar in water. You could easily make this into an all-day smoke because there is just enough nicotine but not too much, and while the flavor is strong, it is more refreshing than fatiguing. Mouth-feel is better than the Three Nuns, but less soft than the Cavendish-enhanced Roll Cake. Lots of good natural tobacco flavor comes from these little curly cuts, which light easily but burn with the slow steady flavor of flakes. Wish I'd gotten more tins of Royal Twist....Read More
