good blend with light casing

Good burley blend with light chocolate and honey casing. You can taste the casing from the first puff, in the middle the burley natural flavor becomes more prominent, the last third or so of the blend is rather bland.
A Heather Honey Burley

If a creamy, honey-sweet burley with no bite is what you’re after, this is it. Burley, as I’ve experienced over 30 years of pipe smoking, has predominately had a brown sugar sweetness. Molasses has long been a casing agent for it and it’s little wonder that when sugar is added to burley, we get a brown sugar flavored tobacco. Cocoa powder is another usual ingredient to burley, but there’s none of that to be found in Golden Extra.. this is different. This is the first Burley I’ve had which tastes of honey… heather honey and no cocoa and/or coffee. Heather honey has a slight smoky flavored sweetness, kind of like the old method of boiling down maple sap with wood firing before the use of natural gas. Maple syrup used to have a smoky flavor to it… and I miss it. Anyways, Golden Extra is a sweet, toasted-oats burley, and it doesn’t grow bitter down the bowl. It maintains a consistent sweetness throughout and the finish is clean and bright. This is just so unusual to me… I’ve long grown accustomed to brown sugar, cocoa and coffee in a burley… and certainly not a burley so bright and sweet as this. It’s got some nicotine too… 2.5 out of 5 on the nico meter....Read More

Excellent Morning Burley

Product: Mac Baren Golden Extra Bulk
This is the perfect morning smoke, it goes great with a cup of strong coffee and it has a delicious tobacco forward, burley profile, just sweet enough to hit the spot without to many flavorings to overpower the blend, it has a little nuttiness, cocoa and fruit and the vitamin N is somewhere in the medium range. I just pack my Peterson pipe, sit back and let it burn away that morning fog. I don't like all burley blends, but I love this one....Read More

I like this tobacco very much. Nothing crazy just tobacco and good tobacco at that.
Sweeter Burley blend..

Product: Mac Baren Golden Extra Bulk
This blend presents as a deep, bready, nutty Burley with supporting VA seeetness..broken flakes are easy to rub or stuff, slightly moist but easily and quickly dried..gives a very mild aromatic cocoa, vanilla essence with good tobacco flavor..nic hit is almost medium..requires a slow cadence if not dried a bit.it will burn warm if you're not careful..overall a good choice for Burley/VA fans..seems like a good blend to jar and age....Read More
First impressions

First impression: Classic Burley flavor, nutty and earthy. The Virginia is way in the back but its sweetening impact, enhanced by the chocolate flavoring, greatly mutes the burley's more tangy sour notes. Coffee and espresso notes develope midbowl. A few minor harsh spots here and there. In general though very smooth and simple in its burley earthiness. Just sweet enough to be an all day smoke. A little monochromatic in its simple flavor profile. Would blend well. Doesn't seem prone to bite....Read More

Arrived perfect moisture content, out of the bag into the bowl. I did a fold and stuff into an MM Legend Cob, grouping some of the half length cuts around the outside of the bunch before loading. Then topped it with some fines
.
The char-light: I caught the odd scent of Turkish Izmure and the
smoke was dry on the palette. This was odd because this blend does not contain Izmure, just Burley and Virginia (I looked it up). And, am pretty sure I never smoked any orientals out of this pipe.

The first half of the bowl: was that same dry smoke no topping detected rather bland. Then, the smoke began to sweeten both in taste and scent. That odd incense-like quality went away. I could start to catch a hint of grass but not forward and not Burley foward either. From there, it was rather melow and enjoyable down to the bottom of the bowl but not satisfying. Likely no Dark Burley cause Dr. Nic is pretty much out of the office for this blend.

One reviewer mentioned that it ghosted his pipe so, I filled the still warm cob with Lane 1Q and lit it up, yee hah! There was some very minor ghosting but, Wow! It went so well with 1Q it made for the most enjoyable bowls i've had all week. I may do that on a regual basis.

Extra Mediocrity

There’s nothing really fine or distinct about this BurVa blend. There’s a good pouch note to be found in Golden Extra—I’ll give it that. Otherwise I encountered a smoke more akin to cigarettes than good pipe tobacco, primarily in the feeble room note. The blend also does lack taste and flavor, though at times, usually commencing mid bowl, you can taste nutty burley that strengthens into a slight cocoa flavor. But I find I almost have to hunt for its virtues—as I try to capture or fathom this blend, to gauge its taste and room note. But in the end I’m likely hunting for something that isn’t there, at least to my beak and mouth.

This blend doesn’t approach Mac Baren’s HH line, where you’ll find its elite soldiers: Old Dark Fired, Bold Kentucky, and Rustica. Still, Golden Extra isn’t a bad blend, just not a very good one. 3.5 stars.
