I decided that this was one I had to try; but then before I received the tin I ordered I started reading reviews that spoke of tongue bite. I hate tongue bite! Fear set in. I finally received my package and decided to chance it. I opened the tin and the first thing that was evident to me was the honey smell. The tobacco was packed tight in the tin and had become somewhat caked together. Pulling it apart I found the strands to be very long and fine. I rubbed the strands out so that they were not stuck together and loosely loaded my smallish bowl Savinelli Virginia. The unlit draw was good and had a nice taste to it. I lit the tobacco and puffed light and easy for a few puffs, I then let the pipe sit for a short time. I relit the tobacco and started smoke with some unease in fear of scorching my tongue. The smoke lasted for approximately 45 minutes and I never had to relight a single time with only a single pass of a pipe cleaner for the slightest of moisture. All said and done, I did not experience tongue burn but did not find this to be a "bowl me over" flavor blend, it was pleasant and I hope to be able to unpack more flavor as the fear of scorching my tongue diminishes. As others have said, I would rate this as a "must try" for most all pipe smokers. Will update after several more bowls. Read Less

t packed easily, lit quickly and burned down to a clean finish. It could burn hot, if a light breeze is blowing or if you puff at it. Otherwise, it behaves itself very well. The tin note does not disappoint: it translates well into the flavour palate, which remains fairly consistent. Again, the flavour is not overly sweet; it is not unlike an unglazed gingerbread cookie. It also leaves a pleasant room note. This was one of the first blends which caused my wife to say: "You smell good. What is that smell?"
I recommend this blend to aromatic smokers and even to English smokers (like myself). You may be pleasantly surprised as I was.

ey, maybe some maple? I don’t know, but whatever it is, it’s light enough to complement the tobacco, not overpower it. The room note is equally appealing, possibly my wife’s favorite (heavy aros actually give her a headache). There’s just something about this blend that keeps me coming back for more.
Back to my other point. When I first started pipe smoking, I think I was too worried about getting it lit well (like a cigar) and keeping it going. This blend killed my mouth. I eventually made my way to VA flakes which also bit, but not as bad. I finally got things figured out, and when I returned to this blend, it was a whole new experience. So learn to smoke this without biting, it’s cheaper than learning on VA flakes. Once you can do that, you’ll be able to smoke anything and you’ll unlock the full potential of each blend. Read Less

ss that balances the sweetness. I detect cinnamon or nutmeg, and it's stronger at times. The room note is beautiful and one of a kind... VERY comforting and pleasant. It's akin to baked bread with a honey scent, and just a touch of woody oak. It's a unique and pleasant aroma which I and others adore. Those two qualities provide the stars, and it ends there. This will bite the crap outta your tongue, lips and gums. Even after aging for twelve years, this must be sipped and yet it still hurts and leaves the tongue raw. The additives are what's doing it, and MacBaren is known for adding a multitude during casing that plays havoc with my PH, apart from their HH line of course. If Per George Jensen would adjust the casing and bring the PH to neutral, I'd probably smoke this daily. Filters help a little, but not much. Besides, they remove intricate nuance that allows me to appreciate the flavors and so I don't use them. The nicotine is mild, but the last 1/4 of the bowl asserts more of it. in St. Bruno or Velvan Plug, it's very faint but it's there and very satisfying in my opinion. I love how florals go with tobacco so I am always looking for a blend that incorporates that into the mix and this one surprisingly does this very well. The one fault that I do find with this blend as I do with many Mac Baren blends is that it has the tendency to bite so you have to be very careful with it, it seems to be more in the topping than the actual tobaccos. The tobaccos used are obviously of high quality and the topping is not over the top so this is not one of those ridiculous goopy aromatic tobaccos, you can actually taste the tobaccos! I'll definitely be getting more of this once my gifted sample runs out.
The only reason I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 4 is the lack of nicotine. While this blend is absolutely delicious, unfortunately I'm still wanting more once I've smoked it all the way down. If Mac Baren would put this topping on a more stout tobacco like Walnut Flake or St. Bruno it would probably be my number 1 blend. As it stands I still love it and I'm happy to have a large stash of it on hand. I like to smoke several pipes in one session and this one almost always makes those sessions.

It lights well, smokes well, and is just as good dry as fresh. Cavendish isn't overdone, and taste evolves very nicely over the course of a bowl. hat if you really take your time to smoke this slowly, sipping it gently, you will really experience SO much more of the flavors as well as spare yourself any chance at tongue bite. Because I'm used to puffing away steadily on most pipes (which is just fine for blends that are much heavier on the black Cavendish, which is sparse in this one), this involved some active self-control on my part, but was well rewarded. I originally did not expect this to be in my frequent rotation, but I'm finding myself going back to this again and again to the point where it is an almost daily thing, and find myself comparing so many other blends to this as a sort of "gold standard".
