ugh not as much sweet or vanilla taste as I had hoped for, if you sip it slowly and slightly breathe through your nose you will get a little sweet vanilla fairly often. Drying for about 30 minutes prior to smoking and packing it a bit lighter than normal helps as well. Pack too tight it gets wet and hot. The room note is fantastic. My wife, who hates all my tobacco except for a couple Boswell brands like raspberry cream or berry cobbler says this one actually smells terrific and I'll have to give it that. It makes your house smell like a cake shop. Absolutely amazing.
The tobacco quality in this is excellent. Far and above any overcased drug store brand you will ever smoke, just not as sweet or cakey as you expect from the tin note. Iām hoping this will satisfy my sweet craving when I want to smoke something other than Nightcap or Sqaudron Leader. This will likely become a tobacco that I stock up 5-8 tins of as it does make for a nice smoke. Read Less

nias, and a seeded earth black of Cavendish. The tin aroma is reminiscent of fresh bakery at a local patisserie. It is in excellent moisture content out of the tin and I recommend you smoke it as so without drying as it will take away a bit of the flavour and aroma. The tobacco cut is excellent, it's a mix of long ribbons and broken flakes, it backs well and can pack tightly without hindering the draw and it leaves a little bit of nice aroma on your finger tips. Also a dry draw test reveal the flavour profile in a teasing way. Upon first light the ribbons catch a nice kindle, but the flakes require a bit of attention.. But once lit, it stays so, and burns well to a perfect, white ashy bottom with a few to none relights. The body of it is quite medium and the aroma makes me inhale the smoke with my nose to get more of it. And the taste is pretty nice and never overpowering. It gives me hints of Vanilla and some creamy, pastry flavour as if it is a freshly made croissant baked with honey. I thoroughly enjoy it, despite my lesser tendency towards aromatics and I see this making my rotation.

e to say, āI don't know what went wrong with Vanilla Creamā? So many reviewers that I thought I trusted led me to this one and I have struggled with it ever since (nah, I still trust those reviewers). There is just something about Vanilla Cream that seems so harsh on my palate. I get the vanilla in the tin note and occasionally the flavor too, but most of the time I feel like I'm having to fight it all the way. In the end, it's just not worth the hassle. I don't need another vanilla tobacco, I have plenty of go-to blends in that genre, some of which are probably also by Mac Baren, lol. So, if you like Mac Baren's Vanilla Cream, great. I think that's great, but after struggling to enjoy nearly 100 grams for over a year, I'm cellaring what I have in hopes that age will do it justice. The Virginia will only mellow and sweeten. Maybe some of the flavoring will be lost, but maybe that's what it needs. I'll pull it out in a year or two and give it another try. Until then I'm keeping my fingers crossed and moving on. Hope this helps. UPDATE (August 2022): I had the opportunity to revisit this blend blindly, and not only did I find it tasty, I found myself drawn to it. For about a week, it occupied my pipes. Now tasting creamy confectionery flavors, I mistakenly guessed it was Bill Bailey's Birthday Blend, so imagine my surprise when I learned what it was. Since then, I've had to revisit my initial review and feel it is worth an extra star. It's still not something I'd smoke regularly, but it has shown that it can be a nice blend to visit. It's also reminded me that no matter how many blends we smoke, or how much we think we know what we'll like, our palate is always changing and it's good to revisit even blends we didn't necessarily like. I jarred it up and left it alone until this afternoon when I was craving a sweet afternoon smoke. I'm thoroughly pleased with this tobacco. Packs and lights easily, requiring very little tamping and only one relight at the bottom 1/3 of the bowl. Medium body to the smoke. I don't usually expect tons of flavor from aromatics, but this one delivers (like other Mac Baren aromatics I've had). Mild vanilla notes and sweet, bready notes from the virginias. Room note is like a cake baking. Mild nic hit. This is definitely one I'll revisit when I have that sweet craving, or want to smoke around others who would appreciate the heavenly smell. Read Less

to remark positively on it. Vanilla Cream has some initial sweetness; a little honey and fruit (blackberry) contribute to that sweetness alongside the tart/bready/grassy golden VA. The cavendish provides some smoothness and creaminess while the burley imparts some body. Halfway yields a more tart (blackberry/citrus) flavor with a consistent underlying smoky or stoved vanilla. This is mild and fresh, which is very different than the Vanilla Flake, which imparts more fermented tobaccos in the base. Donāt attempt to cellar this thinking youāll age the base and improve their flavorā¦ youāll lose the vanilla. If aged tobacco with vanilla is what youāre after, go with the Vanilla Flake. This is very light on nicotine: 1 out of 5. I must state though that MacBaren has been VERY inconsistent in years pastā¦ many of their products, aside from the HH Flake which is topnotch, has caused much discomfort through tongue, gum and lips. Their PH adjusted through their casings has been horrendously inconsistent, which has me wondering why this one was so different. Did Jensen change their procedure or do they now have better employees which are paying closer attention? Iām going to order another 8 oz, and I hope it tastes like this. Read Less

yrup!) for a nice, dry flavor. I buy madagascar bean pods wholesale and flavor sugar with them. All of this is to say, I'm a nut for vanilla. I find it to be anything but "plain."
I also probably bring this up because this blend (the burning smell in the pipe) reminds me of the smell of madagascar beans. Vanilla is ubiquitous with pipe tobacco. As a condiment in casing or top note, it's hard to get away from. There are plenty of blends out there which are enhanced with a sweet vanilla flavor- The two most popular blends by lane and sutliff respectively are "vanilla" flavored blends. One of those is even decent..
But this is a far cry from that. I've tried just about every vanilla blend I can get my hands on but this is really the quintessential flavor I was looking for. Spicy, yet mellow, cooler than other macbaren blends, probably due to the ingenious inclusion of the cut plugs and cavendish.. Lots of nice, clean virginian flavor going on. The tobacco, as with other macbaren blends, comes through quite nicely. I'm really a fan. I don't drink a lot of soda, but this one goes great with an ice cold vanilla coke (made the way i described above) on a hot day. It's a similar flavor really.. That dry spicy sorta thing going on.. There are blends with far more complex flavors (I'm thinking of Dan tobacco) and there are certainly no shortage of blends that are sweeter, many of which are quite nice, but I can't think of a strictly vanilla flavored blend more satisfying than this one. to dry out. That is where I started. The next bowls, I quickly moved to five and then ten minutes to no avail.
Flavor after the char is clearly vanilla with a thick creamy smoke. Retrohale reminds me of a tangy Boston cream custard that quickly turns a bit artificial. Around the 10 min mark it erupts into an inferno despite my best Muttonchop breath work. Typically, this works to keep everything else nice and cool, even 7 seas. But not this stuff. The flavor goes sideways at this point. The vanilla flavor vanishes and is replaced by motor oil, tar, and a hint of sour wet Virginias.
I keep at it to try and subdue this lava demon in my pipe. About twenty minutes in and roughly a third of the way through the bowl it calms down. Most of the vanilla has volatilized and you arrive at a Virgina flavor with a hint of cavendish.
about a hour in and 2/3 of the way through the bowl the vanilla is back. The retrohale is now a bready vanilla cup cake, sweetness is typical virgina. Room note is spiced honey bun.
Reduces completely to Fluffy white ash.
Tongue bite... oh the tongue bite. This is nothing like I've experienced before. My tongue goes completely numb for a few days. My palate is basically sandpaper for the same duration. There has to be some sort of additive in here that isn't in their other blends that generates a very caustic smoke. I'll stash this one for a while, but the tin says it was made Jan 2023, so my hope that this gets better with time feels like wishful thinking. I'll try some other packing techniques on future bowls... you know, when I'm again in the mood to ruin my mouth for a few days. Read Less

cated to new blends. And well as I first started smoking I smoked it too hard and too hot. However, months later, my dog and I walk through the alley in a misty damp night at 2am, everyone is asleep. I smoked a bowl of this in my briar, it was flavorful throughout the whole bowl, truly sweet Virginia. I walked with my dog and thought many things, tasting this sweet smoke. It was not overpowering at all in anything, nicotine, flavor, tongue bite, it was simply perfect for the context. Perfectly mild, wonderfully sweet, yet tobacco flavor still shines through.
I'm young, old enough to buy beer, and I love beer. But it really does shock me how so little people engage in pipe tobacco smoking, what a pleasure, so much history and lore to learn! I'm glad that my immediate family and some close friends are getting into it, and I'm always happy to share with them.
Try some of this, just buy one ounce and give it a shot, I hope you can get the same enjoyment out of it that I have! Read Less

It is one of my basics that I have on hand. It has a nice aroma, but not over-powering. The tin note is truly very pleasing and it smokes very smoothly. I would recommend trying it if you wanted an aromatic that is not over-bearing.

lacks the same creamy rich vanilla taste and burns much hotter. Don't know enough to know if all that can be contributed to the cut or what but over all while a nice vanilla smoke it's left lacking in comparison to it's companion flake.

The vanilla did not come through for me at all in the smoke, a little bit in the tin note. It isn't a bad smoke though, needs to be dried or will give you nasty tongue bite.

My wife bought me a few oz's for Christmas. It has been great. Mild and cool with just the right dose of vanilla. I have to say the 2 tobaccos I have had from Mac Baren have both been superb, the other being Cherry Ambrosia.

I would say that the room note is more noticeable and present that indicating this page. It is a velvety snuff. Smoke not very creamy. It is very soft, ideal to smoke in the company of others without disturbing them.

I pulled all the tobacco out of the tin and placed it in a snap shut mason jar. I found this helped the tobacco as it was a bit sticky

It was a bit on the dry side, as I expected something more akin to 7 Seas regular, yet undaunted I loaded up my larger billiard, a trust old briar from the '50s. Packed well, lit very well, and need only two matches for the whole bowl. A nice white ash, but not much in the way of flavour, no bite at all, light billowy fumes, but what really struck me was how this little bastard sent me straight to the thunder bucket and proceeded to beat the hell out of me from top to bottom, nine different ways from Sunday. Normally a nic-kick will show its ugly head over a period of time, but this fellow Sucker-Punched me in the worst way imaginable. Smoke in, dinner up, breakfast down, and a helluva mess to boot.
