s in a row and it will reveal some plums, florals, sweetness and unforgettable aroma that you will not find elsewhere (except from German aromatics like spring water, wild geese and the like) i tried smoking a tinned version of this from the late 60s to 1970s, and it's a superb blend. One Of The Best & Most Popular Blends For 88 Years!!

Product: Mixture No. 79 Mixture No. 79 1.5oz
A Customer Service Rep at Smoking Pipes told me Mixture #79 is one of their most popular and best selling pipe tobaccos in their history! A little more research showed it’s been one of the most popular nationwide since it first came out in 1933! Why... Read More
? Because it’s one of the best tasting and smelling aromatics to a majority of pipe smokers since it’s release!! I love it and started keeping it in my rotation since 1974. I began smoking it and nothing else since 1976 and never looked back! I found my best friend for my best friend! Mixture #79!
The multiple flavors that rotate through smoking a bowl never tires, always taste fresh, leaving me wanting another bowl as soon as I finish the last! Sure, I’ve tried English, Balkans, and their many clones; most sour tasting weed as soaked in pig urine and over priced. No wonder one of the most popular blends in England is Carter Hall.
My favorite is Sutliff Mixture #79! Sweet, never a bite, multiple flavors melding in and out.
Ignore the snobs! Try #79 and if you like/love it enjoy! If not, then you’ll know! Oh! And if you want to try Dunhill blends, go to Peterson. Dunhill only sells cigarettes now. But Mixture #79 is still here for you...going on 89 years! Try it! Millions love it! Read Less

ra anise did it justice though. You do get a kiss of vanilla here and there and if you air it for 15 minutes before hand it smokes cooler. At times this reminds me of another old codger blend, VIP !
VIP was a birch flavored burley/ virginia blend and it was sweet. Mixture 79 does have a birch beer taste about it on and off. There is something floral that is added which to this day i still cant put my finger on, but it is now more laid back. If you take your time with this blend you will enjoy it, its just not for everyone. Those who can get througj the first pipeful, you will find yourself reaching for 79 more than you anticipated. If you somewhat like it at first it will grow on you, if you hate it you will never pick it up again. To me its a nostalgia smoke and i do enjoy the anise flavor and vanilla in the aroma. Read Less

ppings are a little stronger than in a lot of the other codger blends, but I find them to be very pleasant in their mixture and without that horrible chemical taste. It's a little nutty, a little sweet, plenty of creamy smoke with just a little floralness, plenty of anise and a little bourbon. it takes a few relights to get it going. but once it's lit, it's an almost effortless smoke, with a fairly consistent burn rate. it's a bit chunky in the cut, but packs easily in spite of that. I smoke this at least once a day, usually in the morning with a hot cup a joe or Earl Grey tea. Keep an open mind and enjoy! Read Less

'm not a huge aromatic fan but I do love burley mixtures, and this one doesn't sacrifice the quality burley to deliver a nice aroma. The topping is lovely in the tin/bag note, not an overwhelmingly strong or medicine-y punch in the nose as many aromatics give you, and its flavor in the bowl is rather subtle. It doesn't drown out the natural flavors and aromas of the burley, which, IMO, is one of the most versatile and underrated leafs on the scene. Sutliff uses some quality stock in this mixture too, so there's much to be explored and enjoyed here over two or three bowls sipped in a row. I applaud Sutliff's choice to stick with straight burley instead of adding cavendish or virginian leaf. It redounds to the very classically American, i.e., "codger" character of the mixture, which immediately transports me to an idyllic, sunny, summer day on the farm. I can hear the grasshoppers in the field and smell the tall grass. I can see puffs of dandelion pollen wafting by on the lazy breeze. It's the perfect thing to break in a new cob. And since I like it so much, I think I'll buy some more just to see if perhaps I've let it sot too long in the plastic pouch. Maybe it's even better if I jar it fresh and age it that way. Yes, yes, this definitely calls for more research. Read Less

Beer and anise. Birch Beer tastes like a combination of root beer and wintergreen, so this is definitely birch sap extract. This flavor doesn't come across in the smoke as strong as the pouch note, but smoked at a lower temperature certainly coaxes more of that flavor. There's bit of perfume or floral nuance on the back end too. Not Lakeland strength but it's there. I do not like Lakeland, so if I like this then it isn't a perfume-laden, geranium oil mess like some of Gawith's Lakeland scented tobaccos. Push it and puff a little faster will negate the wintergreen nuance and reveal more molasses and anise. The molasses and anise, which is ever-present, marks an old fashioned quality to this. No bite, no PH issues, just smooth and mild. Definitely an all day mixture with a distinct flavor. Think I'll buy a tub and a dozen more pouches. Nicotine is 1 out of 5. Read Less
